Yes, but it is not an exact science. The best site seems to be: http://www.usingenglish.com/reference/idioms/search.php?q=be at+about+the+bush&d=1 It didn't know 'beat around the bush', but by entering just 'bush', it knew 'beat about the bush' which means the same thing. Another good site, mostly for two and three word phrases, is: http://www.phrases.net/psearch I would like to find equivalent sites for short phrases in Dutch, For single words, these two sites are very good: http://synoniemen.net/ http://www.mijnwoordenboek.nl/synoniemNL.php 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Thanks, Renee, I knew that one and I like it a lot, but it does not give synonyms - and it only refers to 'spreekwoorden'/ proverbs, which - I think - have lost a lot of their popularity. Don't you think? 'Zegswijzen' are way more common, is my impresion.
And thanks, Sr Tommus: the Wikiquote is quite OK, could be quite useful! And the woorden.org even gives synonyms indeed, though it happens in some quite 'strange' way: in that the search engine also checks the explanations! The only drawback might be that when the same terms are not used for the same meaning, we cannot find it. But is a good, no, an excellent start ! Jan: Was the English language expression site (above) something like what you were looking for concerning expressions such as your 'beat around the bush'? If not, there seem to be many more similar English sites (via Google), but they're not as well organised as that one.

Yes, it was, Tommus. You're right about language (or explanations of meaning) not being an exact science, but somehow it might be interesting to list expressions from a semantic-functional point of view. Maybe I'll send you a copy of what I have tried for Dutch.
