I saw earlier this week that you'd made it but I've not found the time to watch until
now.
Well done. I'm certainly not brave enough to speak Japanese on camera. I'm going to see
if I can find Fairy Tale on a streaming site to see if it's as straightforward as you say
it is :-)

Thanks. I guess I'll take brave as a compliment. Although I might take it to mean.. Your Japanese is that bad
and yet you let people listen to it??? Which it kind of is that bad lol. But so is everyone else's who's studying
Japanese. I really do think fairy tale is easier than most anime. Although I have to give myself some credit I
think for getting better at Japanese and learning more vocabulary. I'm on episode 140 or something and the
shows seem to have lost some of the quality. There's some new villains called the jiggle butt gang. I'm gonna
have to find out if the series gets back on track but it's really good up until the jiggle butt episode. Which is
around 140 or so.

Apparently I'm in the midst of a filler arc on fairy tale so that's why I'm thinking its weak. It did get a little more
interesting but I'm looking forward to it ending. It's the only filler arc in the series I'm told. Anyway, if you get to
a group of villains called the jiggle butt gang, it's ok to skip and move on.
I'm thinking of doing YouTube videos in German. Just language log videos. I'm either brave or stupid.

Wow - I'll have to be more careful :-) I meant it as a compliment.

I'll have to remember to stop before episode 140 then :-) I've been trying to watch
drama more than anime mostly to avoid the fantasy type stuff and to hear "real
Japanese", but everything I hear suggests that anime is easier language and so should
make a better starting point.

I don't know exactly which episode they show up in. I think you'll realize it though when they do. Immediately. I wouldn't say you should give up on the show at that point.. I'm told it gets back to 'normal'. Just feel free to skip an episode or two.. I guess I'll post my own opinion on what episodes to avoid.
I just started another anime that seems easy to follow w/o subs (hey, maybe it's just me getting smarter... )
These links are to Crunchyroll.
Haikyuu!!
Fairy Tail
Fairy Tail is missing some episodes on Crunchy but you can see the first few and if you're still interested go check out the missing episodes somewhere else I guess..
Haikyuu!! is a sports anime about a short kid who loves volley ball. He apparently jumps super high to make up for being really short. One of my Japanese tutors are JOI mentioned this anime and I didn't think it was on Crunchy but I just found it. It's fun.
I'm gonna go try a nice 'hard' anime and see if I can enjoy it without subs..
蟲師 むしし
Chances are subs will be needed though. I recall how I tried it with Japanese subs and failed..
*edit*
Don't worry that you meant it as a compliment. That's just my sense of humor.. to put myself down. Well it's also a reflection on being a bit insecure about my Japanese since it obviously isn't super good. That said.. I think I might actually make time to work on my accent. I think shadowing would be good.

As I often do I was thinking about my Japanese while working out (yesterday under the very hot Arizona sun
drinking boiling water from my water bottle) and my thoughts were a bit different than usual. Recently I have
hit some sort of turning point where I prefer watching anime without subs. All anime regardless if difficulty. I
was able to follow the gist of 蟲師 pretty well except for the intro yesterday even. For sure I don't always
understand but it's enough. The subs distract from focusing on Japanese and i just don't like them.
Which makes me think I'm hitting the big goal I had for learning this language in the first place and also the
only goal I felt I could achieve. I figured I could learn to understand anime more or less without subs.
Becoming fully literate and speaking correct Japanese was more of a goal pushed on me by being in a
Japanese class. So I can actually see an end to the constant drilling and SRS. And also updating this log (if
you can believe that). Not yet though. I have 60 odd lessons still with JOI and I am not going to waste those
and I still want to do the JLPT N2. Since that's in December I suppose I'll be updating for the rest of this year.
I'm thinking what I'll do after that. I think I'll probably just casually study when I'm in the mood. Of course, I will
keep watching anime and so I suspect I'll keep getting a little better regardless.
I don't really see myself reading Japanese books in my free time to relax the way I might with German. But
maybe manga since they're easier. I'm not really sure. It's just weird how I started this log years ago and now
I'm thinking about ending it.

Congratulations on making a breakthrough with your listening! That's really exciting news. Keep it up and the JLPT listening exam will be like a walk in the park. Never mind the fact that you've opened the door to a whole new world of native materials!
Although I am a little surprised that making such progress leads you to considering ending your log. Maybe you should work out when the temperature drops a little...
I also have doubts over what I can achieve with respect to literacy in Japanese, but I've decided I'm going to read 10,000 pages before I decide to give up for good. In any case, 10,000 pages of tadoku actually sounds much less intimidating to me than 10,000 Anki sentence cards...

Yeah. Although my progress is gradual I don't 'test' myself that often by going at anime hard w/o subs too much so sometimes I can really see a difference. I don't know what'll happen but I just think back to German and how once I got so I could read comfortably.. well there wasn't any motivation to study really. I just let it go. It seems to me I'll probably do that with Japanese too.. but not yet. I just can kind of see that happening. I was watching ハンターXハンター and although I got ok amounts of the dialogue, the narrator for the show went right over my head. Everything he said. Which makes me want to dig down and start studying.. heh. Which means I'm not at a point yet where I would stop doing this log. But we'll see. I kind of look at your log though and how you stopped but it turned out to just be a break and you came back, even if you updated less often you were still back.
I just had a funny feeling. Usually I go ride my bike for a workout and kind of think about Japanese (and stuff) and how I'll never get where I want to be and wonder how I can study harder/smarter. And now it's like I'm actually getting to a point where I'll be happy. I'll keep studying kanji and stuff at least for the rest of the year but after JLPT I might just kick back and watch anime and only look up words once in a while. There isn't much need for a log if it's so laid back like that. For the past few years Japanese has kind of been this huge obstacle, a frantic obsession. Finally I might get a bit of freedom XD.
Or I might go to Japan...
