argh.. I'm toying with the idea of getting Japanese video games but can't make up my mind. I am pretty sure
I'd have to get a new console system if I did since my xbox360 won't play Japanese version games. The PS3
is region free but it's 300 bucks to get it. I'm not a big gamer anymore - where would I have the time between
work and language studying and anime heh. Plus importing the games from asia is a bit pricey... another
option would be the PS2. It's a bit cheaper but not really cheap (I'd have to get an asian system since it's not
region free like the ps3) either and the quality of the games wouldn't be HD (not sure how much I'd mind
that).

The way you are going with Heisig you should change your name to Cramder! I'm
impressed with how much of it you've managed to get through in such a short time, perhaps it is a more
powerful system than I gave it credit for. Do you feel that texts are looking a bit more accessible now?

And in terms of subtitles, I don't think there's any harm in watching TV shows and things with subs, as long as
you make sure to pay attention to the target language. It can be quite easy to switch off and follow the subs
only, particularly if you are getting on with enjoying the story, but it only takes a bit of self awareness to keep
yourself tuned in to the target language too.

Yeah I feel like that would be a good name for me at the moment heh. I feel the texts are way more
accessible now, which is all the more reason to keep studying it. I could just take what I've gotten and get
back to just studying the language and forget Heisig but with the improvements it's made I'm really loathe to
do that. I'd like to be fluent with a lot more meanings and many of them are just on the tip of the tongue so to
speak when I look at them. But even so just recognizing all the primitives used helps me to remember the
kanji even if I can't remember its meaning which takes away a lot of the intimidation that I felt before. That
being said I'm pretty impressed with the amount of kanji meanings I do readily recognize. It's probably due to
the fact that a lot of kanji are used more than others and they're easier ones to remember anyway.

Yeah the subs. I always try to focus on the language. And right now the subs help more than they hurt for
me. I try to read the English really fast and then focus on the spoken Japanese. If they're going particularly
fast it's easy to miss some of the Japanese that's spoken so that's a drawback. When I watch without subs
the Japanese gets my undivided attention. Except when I go for a while without understanding anything and
then even without subs I start just tuning out the Japanese and looking at the visuals to follow the plot.

So either way I can find myself tuning out the Japanese.

I still often watch with subs too. Actually, the drama I've been watching has subs whether I want them or not, but I could cover them with paper like we used to do back in the day.

One day I was watching, and at the beginning of the show, I understood everything. I thought, "Wow, maybe I should try covering the subs since I am doing so well." Of course, about five seconds later, someone spit out a long complicated sentence so fast that I barely had time to even read the sub and all my illusions were shattered. I am thinking of going through the same drama on more time with the subs covered though.

I bought the PS3. I was looking at some Japanese shooters and they looked really fun. I wanted to play the
new final fantasy too so I ordered that from Japan. It's not cheap. I'm going to finish that game before buying
any more and take my time about it. But I'm looking forward to it.

My jPod deck is up to 600 now. It's a new deck that will go up to 2000 cards instead of my older one that I
did up to 1000. I only tested myself on recognition and not producing Japanese. Originally I had intended to
switch to doing that with the old deck but instead I just added more cards. My flashcard app doesn't have a
really good transitional system to handle that for you like a flashcard app I used to use on my PC did. It's a
shame but oh well. So I'm skipping the recognizing Japanese and thinking English step now for the
flashcards. I think it'll be better in the long run.

I do feel a little rusty having focused exclusively on kanji for so long but it's coming back. I'm a little nervous
about the class I'm taking. I walked into a 2nd semester Spanish class before and the whole class was
conducted in Spanish and the students spoke Spanish too. 2nd semester. I assume that's because Spanish
is easy enough and people usually have a lot of background already that they can get away with that. I would
like the professor to speak as much Japanese as possible but at the same time I don't want to be the
dumbest in the class lol. I assume the other students took the 1st semester course. It starts Tuesday.

Sorry I didn't see the subs comment. Yeah I remember a few months back watching an anime and actually
understanding the dialogue to start and I got my hopes up.. they were dashed later. Overall the anime I was
watching was pretty simple so I did continue to understand more than usual but it was that.

I really do focus on the dialogue. I've gotten much better at not tuning it out as I watch it. It's not as good as
when I watch Spanish/german. Those languages I -can't- tune out the dialogue even if I'm reading subs. My
ear just automatically tunes in. Japanese is gradually getting better. It takes less effort to tune in and I sort of
repeat what they're saying in my head (often not understanding it at all but still repeating it)
----

Class tomorrow. They cancelled the one I signed up for but I was "lucky" to get into another 2nd semester
Japanese course that I could actually attend. It's an hour later and about twice as far to drive =/ (same
school, different campus). I'll find out just how bad the commute actually is really soon.

Was studying some kana today. I ignored kana when I did my kanji thing and it shows. I wasn't smart
enough to learn to write kana initially just to learn to read it. Katakana was a little shaky but I could read
hiragana no problems at all. I was starting to learn to write it then I did my break. Strangely, this time around
I could write the katakana a lot easier than I could the hiragana. I think the katakana shapes are more like
the kanji I've been cramming. Anyway, studying kana the way I've been studying kanji I should be fluent at
writing it pretty soon. It's loads easier afterall.

I'm still working on the vocab again. I'm going to adjust my method a bit. I was initially forcing myself to
study it only by looking at the English and producing the Japanese but I'm going to make a couple decks for
the same words. All spaced repetition. I might even do three decks. One with English on s1, another with
kana on s1, and a third with kanji on s1. I was going through the kana deck of the same words I just made
and it's tons easier. Of course making myself do it the hard way helped me learn I think.

Going to watch a little anime then go to bed. Watching the new winter season episodes on CrunchyRoll. The
show I'm watching now is "Another" (I think). They have it in 1080p now. I'm not sure I see a difference but
I'm sure it's there.

Class is over and I'm back home. It's gonna be hard. My vocab is fine and my kana/kanji skills are fine but my grammar is a bit lacking. I haven't even looked at grammar in about 2 months and I didn't practice it a whole lot when I did. They do past tense and adjective declensions in the 1st semester. I've looked at that before but I didn't really study it so I'm gonna have to scramble to catch up. I wouldn't say the rest of the class has a really solid grip on it but they're definitely better than I was (today). I was seriously thinking of doing the 1st semester instead but at the end the teacher wanted me to stay even though he had seemed hesitant about me being in the class at first. I think I'll learn more if I am thrown into a class a bit beyond me but I'm sure it'll also be more stressful lol.

The professor is obviously from Japan although he didn't give any kind of a background. He conducts the class in English but he expects a really good understanding of the material and grammar and he's a believer in kanji. I think the kanji tests are going to be recognition only.   Looking at the kanji so far I at least know the English meanings for almost all the kanji thanks to my kanji cram sessions. I could probably draw most of them legibly also (although my stroke order may not be perfect). There's no romaji to be seen in this course. If I went back to the 1st semester I'm just scared they'd be teaching kana and that would bore me to tears.

So I'm going to hit the books and start cramming grammar. Oh boy.

There's a couple of Japanese speech contests in Phoenix and Tucson which he is really really encouraging us to enter. We get 8% added to our grade no matter how terribly we embarrass ourselves if we enter. I'm not planning on doing it though heh. Something I might do next year.
