whew! Just made 195 flashcards for counters. I totally forgot I was also going to make flashcards for the obligation/prohibition O.o. NOOO!!!

heh. I agree with you completely about adding too many confusing new synonyms at once. Stupid of me really. I'm following the N3 vocab book I got. If it doesn't get better in another week I'll just take some out of the deck. Or just add stuff like (psst.. it's NOT this word...) to the cards...

I went with N4. I didn't want to stress out over it. Getting a good grade on N4 will be a challenge too. Just passing it *shouldn't* be too hard...

My flashcard app does text to speech so I plan to do a lot of shadowing of the robot japanese voice in my ipod...

So which level did you decide to go for in the end? I'm starting to brick it over N2. I'm doing a very good job of procrastinating it at the moment!

I find the best way of dealing with synonyms is to just try and link them to a word in the target language I already know. If I'm attaching a new word to a word I'm already very familiar with, it seems to work quite well. Trying to learn a bunch of synonyms at the same time would be a disaster for me. It might be worth just deciding that you'll learn one of the words for now, and then reintroduce its synonym later on. Once you start reading more I don't think you'll have too much trouble with phrases like 役に立つ, I seem to see it everywhere.

Oh and I think the phrases of obligation are probably one of the first introductions you get to the craziness of double negatives in Japanese. I just practiced learning things like しなければならない/しなければなりません as set phrases with lots of things like shadowing and repetition until they just fell off the tongue.

Darn. I forgot I had to translate this Reading Assignment for class and tomorrow is study group and I said I'd
have it done. Grr... would rather be drinking beer and watching Naruto. Instead I'm just drinking beer and
doing homework =/..

Ah maybe you should have had Naruto on in the background while doing your homework.

I have to confess, the more I get to know Japanese, the more annoying I find Naruto. I used to quite enjoy it when I was just following the subtitles. You have been warned ;-)

Well today I got some more N3 study materials from a friend who didn't need them anymore. I'll say it's quite motivating - I haven't had anyone give me anything yet to encourage my studying. Funny how something like that can affect your motivation. I was studying pretty consistently already I think but it should require less discipline going forward XD. And these books look good too.

Also I ordered a Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone. My favorite flashcard app author has promised an android version around Christmas so I'm counting on him heh. I chose it because it's cheaper than the iPhone and has a bigger screen.. and the iPhone isn't compatible with my carrier anyway (t-mobile).

Regarding Japanese, I'm making consistent progress on grammar in the class and doing SRS as much as possible on my ipod. I've been testing hiragana/audio side 1 and a 2nd deck with English side 1 (And due to some synonymns I'm learning I'm putting not such and such sometimes on it). These decks have the kanji on the answer side but I've pretty much been ignoring the kanji. This is a 180 from what I was doing a couple weeks ago. I'm itching to start drawing kanji lol. I'll have to do something about this.

Did your friend not need the materials anymore because he passed or because he gave up? If he passed, maybe he can give you some pointers as well.

They didn't give up, and yes I'm getting a few pointers.
