I've been riding my bike a lot recently too. I realised that it's the quickest way to get to work, which is way more motivating than the prospect of exercise. But it's actually pretty good fun too. I feel like a kid when I'm free wheeling. What is the cycling infrastructure like in your city? (I know it's not really related to Japanese, but I'm curious...)
I think switching to native materials without subs is something you'll have to do eventually to improve your listening. When you still struggle to even pick up short phrases, having subtitles is a huge help, but I think because the word order is so different, once you need to try and understand longer sentences they become more distracting than helpful. But I would suggest choosing your material carefully, because some shows are a lot easier to understand than others. There is a list of J-Drama graded for difficulty for Japanese learners here. I think the grading is pretty accurate. Given your liking for anime, it's a shame there isn't a similarly graded anime list, but I expect that will come. I do think that Azumanga Daioh (as recommended by Sunja) is a pretty good place to start for watching without subs, I can usually understand most of what all but two characters say. But overall I would suggest any new series you want to watch, just watch the first episode without subs to start with, but only continue without subs if you understand enough to engage with the dialogue. If the dialogue just becomes background noise, it's probably not worth the time in my opinion. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Surprisingly I've stuck to the no subs since starting as punishment. I told myself if I had to I could
always go read plot summaries if I got frustrated at not following the plot. It hasn't come to that though. I finished doing my grammar flashcards from chapter 1. I think its sticking better this time since I've done them 3 days straight instead of just going through them all in one big session. Making myself sit down to do grammar isn't easy. Once I get going its ok just sitting down to study it is the problem. So I'm happy with that. I also read through chapter 2 of the book tonight. My next course only does 3 chapters into the book so I'm doing pretty well even though I feel like it's really slow. I've made flashcards for most of chapter 2's example sentences for the grammar. I didn't make any vocabulary cards yet. My sleep has been pretty bad lately but I've managed to get the studying in despite being very tired. So I'm feeling pretty good right now about japanese. Rosetta Stone's servers are down. I was skimming Google news and saw Amazon cloud is down taking Netflix and some other stuff down with it... maybe Rosetta Stone buys their network space from Amazon too.
I'm moving forward with accomplishing the goals for this weekend anyway. I have almost finished off chapter 1-4 of Rosetta Stone and made flashcards with it.. including their audio. Almost all of the grammar has been review so far. It's good though. Their examples but it in a different context and they have pictures to go with it and native speakers. Of course they explain nothing but oh well. I find it a little ironic that most of the best advice given seems to be centered around making decks of example sentences and that's pretty much how Rosetta Stone teaches - by throwing progressively harder example sentences at you until you learn it. It seems pretty good. They use a limited vocabulary for sure - but that makes it easier to focus on the grammar. And most of their sentences seem useful. If you make an honest attempt at memorizing all of them you'll end up with a lot of sentences you can use in a lot of situations. Of course, they don't explain grammar and they don't give you any vocabulary lists that I've found. So you have to combine it with other resources or you'll probably not get anywhere. One sentence threw me off: 何本かの花はプラスチックです。 I haven't seen the か (question marker) at the beginning of a sentence like that before. Is it only used like this in this specific phrase 何(counter)かの? They might have taught this in Japanese 101 which I never took heh. I hate it when grammar stuff comes up that I didn't get there. Not too often thankfully. When I finish off 1-4 I'll be moving onto 2-1. I'm curious to see how they up the level of difficulty with part 2. Japanese only has level 1, 2, and 3 unlike other more popular languages with Rosetta Stone that go up to level 5. I really don't know what Japanese misses by not having 4 and 5. I'm sort of watching Goblet of Fire on blu-ray in Japanese. It has actual Japanese subs which is pretty cool - I turned them off though as I can't really read them and it was a little distracting heh. But I still think it's cool. I'm on lesson 2-1-2 of Rosetta Stone... (2-1-1 was really easy but this chapter has more new stuff). Anyway... they haven't taught us relative clauses yet. I get the feeling that this sentence would be more natural with a relative clause. But then.. it seems Japanese likes to over use the possessive の a lot...
すみません。美術館の近くのホテルまでの道 を教えてください。 Frankly I'm not sure how to best translate this into English for my flashcard. This was my best guess - Excuse me, please tell me the way to the museum close to the hotel? Which actually uses a relative clause. I couldn't help it. I dropped the 'that' though to make it seem like less of a relative clause heh. To not use a relative clause... hmm... Excuse me. Please tell me the way until the hotel's close by museum? hmm I guess it doesn't sound too bad... i hate の. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

It is either that or the other way around: "Excuse me, please tell me the way to the hotel close to the museum." If I were a betting man, I'd bet on the second version, but since I only bet when I'm sure about the outcome, I'm not betting on this one. :) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

It's Sunday but it's my Monday. So my weekend ended last night without me reaching those goals.
Making flashcards just takes tons of time. But I'm happy with the rosetta stone set I've started and I did do two chapters or 8 sections. Some of it is good review or even new but some just easy. I'm switching up my flashcards a bit. I'm making time to test Japanese -> English and English -> Japanese
both. Currently the kanji is there but I'm not testing myself on it. Atm I really want to increase my vocabulary a lot... and grammar. Have to prioritize I guess. I haven't really tested both ways at the same time with Japanese yet maybe it'll work well. I'm scheduled to do another Rosetta stone studio session tomorrow. The last one went well. So much easier than my previous one which was like 6 months ago heh. At least it's confirmation of progress. I think it's getting me to think in Japanese. Something is anyway since I'm finally starting to some. Watching an anime right now called つり球 .. I think that's it. I don't have the Japanese on front of me and the title is written in romaji on the cover - tsuritama. It's good. I sort of have a problem with movies whose characters are sympathetic but socially inept. This guy is as socially awkward as it gets. Maybe it's because I was that way as a teenager. It's like I can't watch I have to close my eyes. Well this anime invokes that strong of an emotional response in me so I'm thinking it's going to to be a good series. 1 person has voted this message useful |
