I'm messing with my vocab decks again. And trying to set it up to learn and as I stare at the kanji I keep
thinking it's not fair. As a native English speaker if I look at a word written in kanji and think of the word in my
native language then I fail. But that's all Japanese speakers have to do. Cheaters.

Do you ever test writing words in kanji based on hiragana? Like the kind of exercises in a
more traditional workbook? It might help to start severing your over reliance on English
keywords.

Well in my course we did "traditional" methods of basically writing furigana for kanji in sentences and reading assignments. For a little while I made a vocab deck where I would listen to a word and write its kanji. I liked it a lot actually but it took SO long to get through the words that I gave it up. I'm a little frustrated right now ;/. I think I need to just read and read and forget about flashcards. I'm thinking to German (and Spanish to a lesser extent) where I just read stuff a lot. I did make flashcards and word lists which I looked at a little but really I didn't study them very much. It worked.. I think I enjoyed myself more than I am now anyway.   Except with the N3 coming up.. that seems kind of scary lol.

On I'm making my decks into kanji writing decks again. That is I see the hiragana on side one and listen to
the pronunciation and then my app has a drawing chalkboard thing (it's on my iPad) so I can draw the
appropriate kanji etc. it's slow but I need a change and I think I absorb the words that I do get through better.
The deck includes a meaning (or key word) in English. To help me if I forget it (on side 2). Anyway. Something
happened before just happened a minute ago. I wrote out kanji going off the sound and disregarded th
meaning of the kanji completely. Poor 割り箸. I wrote it as 割り場し. Which is why keywords for kanji are
helpful. So is just paying more attention.

Oh my friend from class showed up in an online lesson at JOI. She told me she intended to take a lesson this
week to try it but didn't say anything after that so it was a surprise. Those lessons are more fun with friends. I
hope she takes more classes. It's 11 pm so I dunno.

Well thanks to your last post I learned that I can't even recognise the kanji for chopsticks.
Whoops. There are some weird gaps in my Japanese.

Yeah that's a kanji I've also failed to recognize many a time. I don't think chopsticks spent
much time in a vocab deck of mine. I hope it sticks it seems kind of important.

I usually find that forgetting something in front of my tutor is an excellent way of
burning it into my head. Mind you, chopsticks is not in RTK1 so I think it's only been in
the 常用漢字 since the 2010 revision. That's my excuse for not knowing it :-)

I just did an N3 prep listening quiz session. It started off horrible. She did a "warm up" and the 1st one was hearing the difference between 病院 and 美容院. I can't do it. At all. I know what the difference is and if they speak in slow motion I can hear it but not at full speed. Luckily that's pretty much the exception. I got most of the stuff questions right and the tutor seemed to think I was more than ready. But she really didn't see why I couldn't hear the difference between びょういん and びよういん.
