Ok I got a full nights sleep. Almost. I went straight to bed after last nights log entry even though I had a
couple hours nap. But I forgot to turn off the alarm and it went off at 4:50 AM. Ugh. Still lots of sleep though
so no excuses on studying. This morning I have 1416 due cards in my Heisig deck :/. I guess a lot of the
cards that I gave a strong response to came due.
Today's Friday but it's my weekend.
Small side note. I got a stand for my ipad from monoprice which is awesome (love that site, everything's so
cheap and good). And with the stand I'm now using my bluetooth keyboard with the ipad. It really rocks and
almost makes me think of getting rid of my desktop. Almost heh. Now if I could get a 2nd ipad and have
them next to eachother linked up so I could cut and paste text between the two etc, like two monitors on my
computer, then that would rule! .. anyway..oh and I just figured out how to toggle between Japanese and
English keyboards relatively easily.. (use the button to bring up the on screen keyboard).
So back to flashcards for a few hours. I'll probably listen to some pandora as it can get a little boring.
Looking back at the New Year's holiday weekend I am pretty impressed with myself. I literally crammed
Heisig for 4 days almost non stop. Too bad that sort of motivation doesn't last forever.

Still doing the Heisig. It's going pretty well. I am pleased that I'm remembering cards I hadn't seen in a while
and some cards I didn't get right the 1st time before. But still many cards I am having to get right the 2nd
time but that's to be expected.
Anyway. I got an email advertising a new iOS app - KanjiPictoGraphix. $13 in the app store which is a little
high for an app (they're usually dirt cheap). I'm resisting getting it but it does look tempting. The author/artist
of the app made a picture for each kanji to help you visually remember its meaning. The artwork is nice and
it's creative. But I doubt it would be better than Heisig. Particularly since I think it only has 600 kanji (albeit
the 600 more common kanji I'm sure). Maybe combined w/heisig it could work. Heisig teaches all the
primitives which is essential to learning kanji no matter what imho. I don't think this app does - it just gives a
picture to remember each kanji as a whole. Still, if you know the primitives already then the picture might be
helpful. And well the artwork looks nice so even just to flip through the pictures would be interesting.
Oh well I will resist. I think I've finally reached a point where I'm not grabbing new language products and am
settling down and I'm happy with the routine I have now. Took a while to get to this point.

What are you doing getting up at 4:50 am?! Are you nuts?! There should only be one 4:50 per day, and it doesn't have an A.M. after it!
And 1416 due cards. Poor thing. I have all my decks set so that I don't get any new cards until I've reviewed all the due cards. I go through all the due cards in all the decks first. Then if I've done less than an hour on that, I go through the new cards. It keeps me from going too crazy.

Yeah I wanted to review all 2000 of heisigs kanji so I just kept adding new cards and let the thing grow.
Looking back I probably shouldn't have done it like that. The app has different settings - I could have used
the ordered setting just to make myself draw each kanji correctly once and after doing all 2000 gone back to
the spaced repetition setting and added cards to the spaced repetition deck in a more reasonable manner...
but what's done is done heh.

Well I'm inspired to go back to watching anime w/o subs. I wonder how long that'll last. I don't understand a
lot so I'm going to have to watch it twice - once again with subs. This will help though right? The quote that
got me was -Stop waiting until you're "ready"-
Accordingly I'll start with Naruto (see pic to left).

And I'm now down to 1296 due cards in my Heisig deck. That took a while too although I did let myself get
distracted from time to time. Doing this Heisig deck is a lot slower than just regular vocab - I have to
remember the story and draw the kanji out etc. Real pain.

Well I'm not ready for watching anime w/o subs - at least not if the subs are available to use. If they weren't
available obviously watching TV w/o subs would be good but subs are better for me right now. Ugh. I just
don't understand enough yet. I'm thinking maybe I could try dropping the subs after I read an actual book.
Even a small one. If I haven't done that then my Japanese is still pretty pathetic and there's no sense in
making myself suffer through anime I really want to enjoy yet doing it w/o subs. I could watch it twice but that
means I get to watch half the anime O.o... Not a sacrifice I'm willing to me make right now heh.

The way you are going with Heisig you should change your name to Cramder! I'm impressed with how much of it you've managed to get through in such a short time, perhaps it is a more powerful system than I gave it credit for. Do you feel that texts are looking a bit more accessible now?
And in terms of subtitles, I don't think there's any harm in watching TV shows and things with subs, as long as you make sure to pay attention to the target language. It can be quite easy to switch off and follow the subs only, particularly if you are getting on with enjoying the story, but it only takes a bit of self awareness to keep yourself tuned in to the target language too.
