Wow. I caught up my RTK 1 deck. I have 1852 active - not due. I wonder how many I'll see tomorrow. I got
through a lot of cards I hadn't seen in months lol. Generally I got stuff right the second time I saw it with a few
exceptions. I think I am going to increase the size of the deck pool from 12 to 15 or maybe 20. I've always
been behind on this deck since I ambitiously added so many cards at once during the holidays when I
crammed new cards for 4 days straight or something. Then with the Japanese course I never had time to do
the deck properly and the 2nd half of the course I didn't even try at all. But they've stuck in my head more or
less I think. We'll see how reviews go. I still need to add the rest of course too. I added 60 or so a couple
days ago and it's going well. I am excited about starting RTK 2 as soon as possible.

Oh one thing I'm doing with kanji now that I wasn't a few months ago... I'm writing them down so I can
see them. Usually that means on the iPad (the spaced rep flashcard deck I have does this feature). Or
on a white board I have handy too. I think it helps more than doing it invisible like on my hand or on a desk
with my finger.

I think it is necessary to write them a least some of the time. If you can't see them, but only write the strokes with your finger, then you don't really know if you wrote it correctly. You look at the answer and think, "Yeah, that's what I wrote." because you know you got all the strokes. But you have no idea of whether or not you have the balance correct or if your kanji is lopsided. Some of the slightly weird ones, I have to write several times before I'm satisfied with how they look.

箋 is an example of one I had trouble with. I'd put the bamboo at the top and then try to draw the two fiestas under it, but it would come out looking really tall and skinny. I'm used to the fiesta being on the side, so I usually draw it tall and narrow, but for this kanji I had to learn to squash it down short and fat. It often takes me a few tries to get it right.

芯 is another example. My flowers and my heart don't look like they belong together. They just look like two separate things I've drawn on the paper.

My kanji all look a bit funny although less so than when I started my course. My teacher was really strict (too
finicky I'd say sometimes) on kanji and hiragana and it really helped me improve.   Especially my hiragana.
The kanji has a lot more room for improvement in terms of making it pretty.

When I was doing the kanji with my finger I wasn't too concerned about the ratios of the different primitives to
each other but the occasional funny kanji would make even me is unsatisfied with how I wrote it... an example
is 卵. I would write that over and over and think it was wrong. Being able to see what I write is helping my
kanji look tons better but it's also helping it stick in my memory better I think too. I recommend a white board
or something for practice to anyone learning.

Well the kanji reviews today were not bad at all. like 170 or so. I finished like a half hour ago. This is weird.
I've never been caught up on this deck. The reviews are easy - I don't blank out like I sometimes do doing
vocabulary, so I always get them the 2nd try, some the 1st. Not sure how long it'll be when I will literally know
the English meaning for -every- one of the RTK kanji. Pretty cool. I already know the majority I think and the
others are sort of on the tip of the tongue. Except for the ones I haven't added yet...like 200ish to go I guess.

I'll add like 20/30 more tonight. But I wanna start in on RTK2. Yeah before I even finish the 1st one. Really
wanna know the sounds!

Oh I had to go into my boss's boss's room today for a brief review of my work. When it was done one of the
managers asked me how I did on my Japanese final.. thank god I got an A for the course lol. I'd hate to have
to admit to anything less to the upper brass. I guess I was ignorant thinking that writing kanji characters on
my ipad/white board in the break room would go unnoticed lol. Obviously I stand out like the geek that I am.

This stinks. My list of N3 vocab seems to be flawed.. it had this example:

計   かたち   shape, form

Of course I thought it odd that the kanji for plot had this 2nd meaning but hey I didn't know. Decided to
double check it and it's no where near correct. Ugh. I think the list of words is mostly correct but I don't want
mostly. What a pain.

Unfortunately mistakes happen. I generally avoid flashcard decks made by others, but only because I find they work best for me to review stuff relevant to me, it's not a quality issue. I've made mistakes in my own decks before and they come to light eventually. To give some additional perspective, I've spotted mistakes in proper published textbooks too.

Yeah I probably am over reacting but it makes me paranoid about the other words and kanji. If I stay with the
deck I'll have to go in and proof every word myself. Ugh. I am thinking of just using my jflash app. It has a
lot of decks and I trust it to be correct. No sound though. I like the way it does the cards too.. It's not totally a
spaced repetition setting so if I get behind it doesn't screw me over. Combination of Leitner and spaced
repetition per what they say. I'm not sure where they get the words from their N3 deck doesn't filter kanji
expected in N3.. Ill see rare kanji like for 石けん they use 石鹸. Actually it's the old N3 instead so I'd probably
move onto the n2 deck in a little bit.
