Super Duper mega challenge update!

So in the last couple of weeks I have returned from a 7 week trip to Chile, Argentina,
and Uruaguay. I definetly had over 50 hours of conversations while I was there,
but to make it interesting, I am only going to log 40 on the bot.
I would of liked to track things more precisely but I got caught up having a good time.
I will be writing a detailed account in my log.
For some reason the twitter bot doesnt seem to want to log it at the moment though- I
will persevere!
I also did a little reading and writing- for me thats definetly the hardest part of the
challenge!

Well, I have temporarily given up on finding Spanish movies to watch. I found a free telenovela site that shows
15 minute increments of shows, which allows me to watch maybe 2 at a time. Although I can understand 70-80%
without subtitles (don't know how to get them), I don't think I'm missing a big chunk of the action. It's not
terribly engrossing, but I'm practicing.

Also still reading Casi una Mujer. Hope to finish it over the Thanksgiving holidays! Not writing down much
vocabulary at this time, more trying to read for pleasure. If there's something I absolutely can't figure out, I do
look up a word.

Peliculas (14/50) 28%

Slow going, but still making progress.

UPDATE - Added French movie entries 15-18.5 and Dutch book entries 20-28

At long last, I finished Clash of Kings in Dutch. This was without a doubt the hardest and longest book I've
attempted in Dutch, and only the third that I've read without having first read it in English. I still have a ways to go
before getting to 99%+ vocabulary and comprehension, but I generally could read without a dictionary and follow
everything pretty well. I'm now at a point where I have to decide what to do with my Dutch, because it's taking a lot
of my study/reading time, but I only started studying it earlier this year on a lark to see what would happen. I have
no real plans for using the language, and while I certainly enjoy and appreciate it, I have definite plans for using
French, Hebrew, Yiddish, German, and Spanish, and I could use my Dutch time to study those if I decided to give it
up, hard as that would be right now.

I also "got through" this French audiobook. I can tell that I've come a long way, and that I have a long way to go
still. I probably am not ready for audiobooks where I don't already know the story. As for French books, I've taken
the leap up from Harry Potter and started in on Game of Thrones. I'm also still struggling to get through Le Petit
Nicolas, but not because it's hard. I've really started finding it annoying. Every chapter is the same thing over and
over: the kids are horrid, terrible people, Alceste is a fat pig, Eudes is destined for lockup as a violent offender, and
several boys cry. AJATT rules say I should drop it. I'm 100 pages in, so maybe I'll just take credit for one book and
move on...

I completed my hundredth German film this week. For the purposes of the challenge I have been counting any length of film as a film (whether it is more/less than 90 minutes), and counting TV shows in 90 minute units, rounding down to the lower number for series.

When I started I was borderline A1/A2, and would never have considered watching a film without subtitles. Now I am quite comfortable going to cinemas and just watching a film, though certain subject areas (like crime dramas/westerns) are still hard for me to understand, which probably indicates areas I should try to watch in the future.

Some quick observations:

* When I started the challenge, my German was only at a strong A1 level, but I still benefited a lot from diving into watching shows. I found that I could watch without subtitles almost immediately (I only used subtitles with the first film), and that watching without subtitles forced me to actively listen much more carefully. Given the level when I started I am convinced that language learners at a basic level would benefit from watching shows in their TL without subtitles on a regular basis.

* From a practical point of view, while I started out watching a lot of German movies, over time I moved to dubbed TV series. I found dubbed films to be generally easier to understand, as you don't have to deal with regional accents/expressions. Renting out a whole season gives you a lot of hours of input, and knowing the characters/storyline is helpful in supporting your understanding of what is going on.

* So how have I benefited? My German has obviously improved significantly since the start of the challenge. It's hard to know how much to attribute to watching and how much to other things (an hour of Anki per day; German classes; conversational practice), but perhaps this is the wrong way to look at it, since these things work synergistically (the words learnt in Anki are tested while watching, and words picked up while watching are added to Anki to consolidate). I certainly don't believe that I would be at B1 if I hadn't been watching these shows.

* And the limits? At my level, watching seems to be mostly about consolidating already learnt words, than picking up new ones, so additional active vocabulary building is essential. At this point I really feel I will benefit from reading, and that for hour-for-hour spent I will get more out of reading than viewing.

* At this point, I don't think I will be able to complete the 100 books part of the challenge. I am going to continue watching and ramp up the reading and see where I get by next year, but personally would be very happy if I managed 25-50 full books by the end of 2013. Personally, I would prefer the weighting between movies and books to be a bit more equal. A movie seems to be about five-to-ten times harder than a movie, so perhaps a reasonable challenge for myself going forward would be 25 books and 250 movies by the end of next year (a much stronger challenge would be 50-500, but that is probably not possible timewise.).

While I wish my level was a bit higher, it's certainly nice to have reached this point in the challenge.

Finished Casi una Mujer before Thanksgiving! 310 pages! Certainly easier to read now than during the summer,
but can still be frustrating that there is ALWAYS (at least!) a word on every page that I don't know. But my
vocabulary is improving, as is my reading speed. Excited to begin another book. Maybe La Ciudad de Bestias by
Isabel Allende or Malinche by Laura Esquivel. I've read other books by these authors but in English, so it will be
exciting to discover them in Spanish. I'm also tempted to read the first memoir by Esmeralda Santiago, Cuando
Era Puertorriquena, but as I already have the other 2 books, will choose one of them today.

paginas 1144 (22%)
5. Casi una Mujer (310)

Well, I've hit 20% for reading & watching. Also have plans to get Netflix on the TV, so I don't have to sit at the
table to watch any movies. Maybe that will make watching more tempting. Wonder if there's time to watch an
installment of Angela before beginning Thanksgiving preparations?
