Here I go registering!

LANGUAGE: French

CHALLENGE: HALF

CURRENT LEVEL: Probably a DELF 1ER DEGRΕ, but horrible would be more accurate! Think very low level.

COMMENTS: I choose this way of remembering my french, because I can't start from the very beginning now. Plus I want to really be able to use french and practice is the best way for me. I have many books and I can get my hands on films without a problem. So I can do it. This challenge is exactly what I was planning to do for french, and you just gave me more motive and clear goals. This is great, thanks Cristin for suggesting it.

Cristina, you wrote in the update that i have 554 movies. But I "only" have 303 :)) I have
50 rather than 100 in Polish, for example.
Even my total goal for movies is just 550 :D With 100 in Italian (done), Portuguese, Danish, Romanian and 50
in Polish (done), German and Belarusian.

Ok, I'll fix it. I had to guess at the amount where you had the stars, and math was never my strong suit
anyway :-)
When you hover the star with your mouse it shows the number:)

I've posted more complete reviews on my log of some of these.

flics

36. Angel-A (Luc Besson, 2007)

37. La nuit Américaine (Day for Night; François Truffaut, 1973)

38. Journal d'un curé de campagne (Robert Bresson, 1951)

39. 8 femmes (François Ozon, 2002) - I love this movie. Here's a clip of Fanny Ardant singing A quoi sert de vivre libre. If you like this, you'll like the movie.

40. Les adieux à la reine (Benoît Jacquot, 2011). The last days of Marie Antoinette, as told from the viewpoint of her lectrice. A fascinating look into the psychotic world of Versailles. I don't know if it's been released in the US. The complete movie is on YouTube, but without subtitles.

books

36-40. Germinal. Émile Zola, 1885 (576 p). It took me six weeks to get through this, and that was using the parallel text version I linked to. The language was technical at times, but not especially hard. It was just slow going.

But what an epic, powerful story. It follows the course of a miner's strike in the north of France, step by brutal step, as the miners are first inspired to dream of a better world by the young revolutionary Étienne, and then brutally starved into submission by the bourgeoise. It's not an easy read by any means - we follow a dozen major characters as each one slowly reaches their breaking point. You'll be ready to overthrow the government by the end of it ... and maybe that was the point.

bandes dessinées

Blacksad, Tome 2: Arctic-Nation. Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido, 2003. Great art, an engaging and complex story ... but bandes dessinées are so damn expensive that I don't know if I'll continue with them. If I do, it will be with the complete editions intégrales that I see sometimes on Amazon.

I still have a few at home, though, so I'm not done with 'em yet.
