UPDATE - Added French Book Entries 6-8
Finally finished another "real" French book. Reading HP is getting easy enough that I can really enjoy it now, though other books still are quite challenging. Strangely, I seem to have the easiest time in terms of French vocabulary and grammar reading...tech blogs. I also managed to squeeze in a head trip by reading Hesse's Steppenwolf for the first time. Man, that was weird, but generally seemed to make thematic sense. Amazing. Time to decide on my next French book, after I finish Le Petit Nicolas. I'm doing the 6WC in French this time, so it shouldn't be long. And I also made another impulse buy today, driven no doubt by the fact that I work upstairs from a bookstore with a Spanish books section (and no other foreign-language books): Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal. No, I'm not studying Spanish...yet. My mother is fluent in it, I live in the US, and I've already learned a ton of French and Latin, so it's really only a matter of time. Maybe I can learn Portuguese first. =) BOOKS (French) 6-8. Harry Potter et la Chambre des Secrets FILMS, ETC. (French) 14. ... BOOKS (Dutch) 19. ... FILMS, ETC. (Dutch) 24. ... I think I'm ready to confess that I bit off more than I can chew and now I think I'm going to have to bail. I'm not doing language regularly right now and I've fallen massively behind. It's time to regroup and rethink so I'm going to go curl up in my log and figure out my next step. I'll have to abandon participation, but I wish everybody the best of luck with this monumentously inspiring challenge. I'm still participating in the challenge, although it's been a while since I've checked in. Reading is much easier. I can
do about 15 pages/hr. I've stopped writing down vocabulary, although I still look up the occasional word. My passive vocabulary has really increased & reading Casi Una Mujer has become more of a pleasure than a learning activity. 200 pages in. Time has been a major factor ... just hard to fit it in. Have started several Spanish movies, but not liked any enough to continue with them. I'm sure the time invested in the last 3 would count as a movie, but I don't want to count it unless I actually finish it. Well, as I have some quiet time now, I'll get back to my book. Six Months: Les anges en danger
(this morning's them inspired by MC Solaar) The theme these past weeks has been children in danger. I didn't mean to have such a dark October - Une vie de chat was at the top of my netfliz queue! What they sent instead was: Polisse (Maïwenn Le Besco, 2011) This French drama presents a fictionalized but well-researched portrait of the juvenile protection division of the Paris court system, following a documentarian as she films the employees in the department and the children under its authority. Jeux interdits (Forbidden Games; René Clément, 1952) (This) bittersweet drama depicts the ravages of war on its youngest victims. After being orphaned when a Nazi strafing kills her parents and her dog, 5-year-old Paulette (Brigitte Fossey) is taken in by farm boy Michel Dolles (Georges Poujouly) and his family. While his parents are busy feuding with their neighbors, the youngsters cope with the death surrounding them by creating a cemetery for animals killed in the fighting. These turned out to be two amazing films, and surprisingly complimentary. Jeux interdits dealt with children attempting to understand the violence around them, and might be one of the most beautiful anti-war films I have seen. It's not as heavy handed or as maudlin as the clips make it look, and there are plenty of surprising turns. Polisse focused more on the adults trying to protect children, and the emotional impact this has on them. It is an intense and riveting film, similar to The Wire. It won the Grand Jury prize at Cannes last year. Meanwhile ... Jean Valjean has rescued Cosette from the Thenardiers, and now Victor Hugo has gone off on another damn tangent. This time it's on the history of convents. He keeps killing the flow of the story with these digressions.
