Lunch (~45 minutes)

Greek

Listened to FSI Greek Basic Course (Units 2-3)
- The final lunchtime FSI Greek session for a while. I just realised I should've moved on a unit, as unit 4 has a lot of useful material. If I get a chance, I might do it tonight.

Evening

Greek

Read\Listened to FSI Greek Basic Course (Unit 4) (~1.5 hours)
- Having had a quick glimpse, I decided to cover this unit in the evening session rather than TOIG. I think my decision was swayed by the weather, which was terrible. It covered a lot of useful food terms, and some other useful adverbs. E.g. πάντα (panda) - always

Listened to FSI Greek Basic Course (Unit 4) (~30 minutes)
- Managed to squeeze a short walk in. The tape for unit 4 is really long, about 30 minutes compared to the normal 20 minutes.

Morning

Greek

Read\Listened to FSI Greek Basic Course (Unit 4) ~20 minutes)
- Did a quick read of unit 4, but didn't get to the end.

Listened to FSI Greek Basic Course (Unit 4) (~20 minutes)
- Listened to the first twenty minutes of the tape. Between the previous evening session, and this morning session, I anchored some of the vocabulary.

-- UPDATE --
As I'm heading from work at lunch today, and travelling to Cyprus early tomorrow, this will be my last post for a couple of weeks. I'll try and keep track of my Greek study while I'm there, and do an update when I get back. Will I continue with Greek when I return. I'm not sure, but we'll wait and see.

Holiday Summary 24/10/08 - 09/11/08

- This is a summary of all the study I've done while away on holiday, and on the Sunday of my return. I got a bit done, but never as much as hoped. I'm very tight for time at the moment, so I'll only do a quick summary.
- I realised I'm exhausted today, so my posts today might contain typo's and other mistakes.

Greek

Listened to Take Off In Greek (Units 1-5) (~1.25 hours)
- The last listening session, before I headed.

Read Take Off In Greek (Units 1-7) (~14 hours)
- Managed to do about an hour a day on this course. I varied the study from reading the dialogues, learning the word lists, and completing some of the exercises. As I wasn't listening to the audio, I tried to listen out for any of the new words I encountered. If I return to the course, I'll need to redo units 4-7 properly.

Various Materials\Practice (~13 hours)
- Apart from the reading and learning from the phrase book, I found myself deciphering menu's, inscriptions, and various other Greek texts. I also got to practice simple Greek in shops and restaurants, and did a lot of passive listening. Towards the end, my Greek had really started to progress, and I could pick up the general theme of conversations.
- I did question cramming Greek in a week before heading to Cyprus, but I'm really glad I did. If I'd stuck to my original target languages, I wouldn't have done much study at all. Being in the place, where the language is spoken, is very motivating.

Russian
- While in Cyprus, I managed to practice speaking and reading Russian, as it seems to be a very popular destination with Russians. Perhaps the similarity between the Greek and Cyrillic alphabets plays some part, and their shared orthodox roots.

Michel Thomas Advanced Russian CD4-12 (~10 minutes)
- Listened to the final track, and completed the course for now. I might return to it in February before the Vocabulary course is released.

LIYC Russian 1 (1-2 to 1-11) (~65 minutes)
- Completed listening to the first CD of the course. The last tracks cover the numbers, which I've drilled on a number of occasions previously. I might start skipping them after a few repeat sessions.

Morning

Hungarian

Read Assimil Hungarian with Ease (Units 12-14) (~20 minutes)
- Decided to return to the Assimil course again. I covered some old ground, and revised 12, 13 and the first half of the summary unit 14.

Listened to Assimil Hungarian with Ease (Units 12-17) (~20 minutes)
- I think I'll return to listening to Assimil for the rest of the year. The quiet woman is annoying, but I'll try and put up with it.

Takes a true language nerd to study while on holidays. (I did the same.)

Great work DaraghM!

Shalom,
Yehoshua.

Lunch (~45 minutes)

Hungarian

Listened to FSI Basic Hungarian 1 (Units 2-2 x 1.5)
- The second tape is over half an hour long, so I didn't get to hear it twice. As I've completed the MT Russian, I might switch to the LIYC Russian for lunch, and the FSI Hungarian for the evening sessions.

Evening
- Thankfully managed a decent study session in Spanish. As before, I'll concentrate mainly on Spanish until I'm fairly competent, but keep the other languages ticking along.

Spanish

Assimil Spanish with Ease - (Active Wave 23, Completed Unit 69, Started 70) (~1 hour)
- It's been a while since I did the Spanish Assimil, and the active wave was particularly hard. Yet again, I didn't get to revise any of the earlier units, and saved my energies for tackling the new units.

Listened to Assimil Spanish with Ease - (53-80) (~1.25 hours)
- I completely forgot which track I was meant to start on, and listened too far ahead to the end of the third CD. I might increase the amount of Assimil I do in the evenings, and alternate between earlier and later listening sessions.

Barrons Vocabulary (~1.5 hours)
- It felt nice to return to the easy learning pace of Spanish vocabulary. The list covered parts of the house and appliances, and gave a couple of words for some items. E.g. percha, gancho (clothes hanger)

A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish (~45 minutes)
- I haven't looked at this book in a while, but decided to read about some of the Spanish conjuctions, and a little on the uses of the subjunctive.
