Captain's log:

I studied Russian instead of nuclear chemistry. What a surprise - these new language studies are taking over my brain! I should have become a linguist, not a scientist, haha... anyway. I should find some more time in my regimen tonight to tackle quarks and such...haha. я очень хороший физик.

I started on Unit 2 of TY. (Russian, being the only language I have study materials for at this point in time). There is plenty of good stuff about this material (such as that when they introduce a case or a new verb conjugation, they give you the whole list and they don't skip genders or common exceptions) - in other words, TY is a little thorough in its coverage of Russian grammar. I have covered some of the grammar topics which are introduced in this unit in class already - saying my name and greeting is not much of a problem at this point. So I am comfortable skipping that. The prepositional case was also covered in class already, so that too wasn't presenting a lot of trouble - the only question is: when does one use в or на? The dialogues seem to almost omit the в in speech, as if it were an afterthought tacked onto the declension of the noun. I can barely make it out (the e at the end gives the game away, which makes it possible to pick up on even if you missed the eliding в).

However, they just really throw you in the deep end with verb conjugations. They don't beat around the bush with it - hello, verbs. They give you three important groups of regular conjugations (-ать, -ить, -авать), and the irregularly conjugated жить. Now, this is a lot of information to absorb in one go, even for me (I have an almost eidetic memory and thus never spend much time memorizing vocabulary). Fortunately, I do understand the patterns - I will learn them quite fast, I am sure of it. But it's going to take some time to do this, and I will need to repeat it a few times, and not today because else I will not remember a week from now (if I remember it a week from now, I will probably not forget for a lifetime). I hope class will cover present tense verb endings, as my teacher announced we would - class is slow though, so I hope it comes to pass.

For now, my little booklet which I use to denote everything and anything of importance when it comes to TY, has them safely recorded for future reference. The exercises containing verb conjugations were fairly easy for me to do - redoing them and conjugating them somewhere this week should be a good exercise for me to see whether I have remembered them truly.

I feel like there is progress now though. Like there is a semblance of Russian thought in my brain. Verbs make things easier. I feel like I have learned something.

Today I hope to start on unit 3 of TY, after I finish the last Nuclear Chemistry slideshow for today. I feel like I am improving with my Russian. I actually hope to complete the Trans-Siberian journey one day. It feels like I should do it, just to get some real Russian experience of life. But first, before that mega-trip, I hope to visit Saint-Petersburg - it is rumored to be wondrous, and I want to visit the эрмитаж as well as the Зимний Дворец.

There is also Russian homework for the next class based on the Ruslan book, which I will do later this week - some of it I have already done, though. I will use it as a good reinforcement for learning my verb tenses and conjugations, which came along quite nicely during class as we have been learning both the -ать conjugation of verbs, as well as the past tense (using работать as an example). I've written down a tonne of new words that occurred during class - they will go into my Anki deck.

This Russian thing does not feel as difficult as it should. Perhaps it's me, or perhaps tales of difficulty are tall tales indeed. I know that my Russian is far from anywhere near good, but I can feel it coming together and that is quite a good feeling - it's been a while something new has excited me this much.

Я люблю изучать русский язык!

I have tentatively started on lesson three of TY Russian. Some parts are, thanks to class, again familiar, but it's time to learn the accusative case, something not covered in class yet. It's not too tough, but with other matters on my mind, this isn't sinking in the way I want it yet.

Not that the concept is hard - it's based around verbs of motion rather than position. But still.

My Anki flashcards are working like a charm, though, but then vocab is not my problem in learning. It's getting the confidence to string sentences together and write and let the language flow. It's not doing this yet.

Hi, @tarvos!

Some corrections:
Сегодня я изучал по-русски. => Сегодня я изучал русский (язык).
Я думаю, что я хорошо изучал по-русски. => Я думаю, что хорошо занимался.
В школе мы говорил где мы были. => В школе мы рассказывали о том, где мы были.
Я не был в России. У меня есть пдан => У меня есть пЛан.
Я не знаю когда я иду в России. => Я не знаю когда еду в Россию.

In Russian we don't use the word "I" so much like in English.

You mean it is not heard well?
That's an interesting moment for me.

It might just be the dialogue having a shitty recording, but yes, sometimes, it's really hard to hear - this is because it assimilates with the previous word, so I had some trouble picking it up the first one or two times round. I can manage, though. It's because it's not really pronounced as v shkole, but vshkole, I guess.

I have a few questions about your corrections. Some of these, obviously, are words I don't know yet (I shall add them to my vocabulary lists and practice them).

If a verb ends in ся, does that mean it is an imperfective verb? I don't know how to conjugate these yet...

And the пЛан was a typo, haha... I was using a Russian keyboard on my laptop to type this (I installed it and switched) but I'm clearly not used to the layout of the letters yet as I only see my trusty Qwerty on here.

what is the difference between еду and иду?
