MODERATOR: Please make this “sticky.”

I might soon regret this, but since no one else seems very eager to start organizing TAC 2013, I thought I would give it a try. I have nothing else to do anyway, and I will simply do my best to be in a location with internet access at the end of the year. I think I will probably be very bored with holidays after a few days anyway and will come home before New Year’s.

I think most people know what this challenge is about. The idea is to learn as much as possible in your target language(s) in one year and document your progress as you go. You need to make a language-log and include “TAC 2013” in the title. If you are on a team, include the team name as well. You are allowed to continue an old log, just change the title and edit the first post to indicate which page TAC 2013 starts on.

Teams will need to decide a leader to make a team thread in order to organize their team. How each team would like to use their thread beyond that is up to them, but if you want to see an example of a team that makes good use of their team thread, check out Team Sputnik.

If any of the 2012 teams want to continue as teams in 2013, speak up. It will definitely make organizing easier. Otherwise, if you have a suggestion for what kind of team you’d like to be on, that would also be helpful. Since about 3/4 of the participants are likely to drop out during the year, I think we should try to create fairly large teams. Smaller teams usually end up with only one member after a few months, and that’s no fun.

In the past, teams have usually been formed according to target language, but there have been some other suggestions as well this year. So, any kind of team is fine by me as long as you can collect enough members. What “enough” means is up to you, but you might want to keep in consideration that small teams usually disintegrate. Also in 2012 there were people who were on several teams and if anyone wants to do that, it’s also fine by me. Just remember; team members are expected to read each other’s logs, so it might be a lot of work in the beginning if you are on more than one team.

There is no official end date for sign-ups, but I’d prefer that anyone wishing to sign up for a team after the end of January, ask that team.

To sign up, post a message including:
Language(s):
Team or Individual:
(Optional) Comments, ideas, thoughts about what kind of team you’d like to be on, etc:

Remember to post a link to your log and also to the team log, so that we can keep a list.

Languages: Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Persian

Team/Individual: TEAM

Comments: vermillon and I have been mulling over the idea of an Asian Team 鶴. We're currently figuring what kind of requirements we'd like for that team. I'd also be happy to join a Persian team if there's anyone else interested in studying this language.

PS: Thank you for organizing, Brun Ugle! I feel like TAC 2013 is in good hands :)

Language(s): Japanese (primary) and German
Team or Individual: I'd join team う or whatever the Japanese team will be called, and
possibly a German team as well.

And we should totally have a Japanese only skype (text) chat group or something.

EDIT: Doesn't 鶴 mean som sort of bird? Heisig keyword was "crane"...

I'd already figured you for team う or whatever we decide to call it. We'd talked about Skype before, but it never happened. I think it could be a good idea if my stingy old landlord ever fixes the internet enough so that I can be sure of a good connection. As it is, I sometimes don't have any connection and other times have to walk around with my laptop looking for a signal.

I'm not entirely sure what 鶴 has to do with anything, but it does mean crane. Perhaps you were looking for a bird that has the same pronunciation as う in which case 鵜, cormorant, would fit. That would perhaps be a more creative name than the alphabet thing we have going.

EDIT: Oops. Now I see why you were asking about 鶴. You were responding to druckfehler, not me.

For 2013 I am planning to take Japanese as far as I can and meddle with German when I tire of Japanese. I would love to join a Team う.

Right, 鶴 means crane. This year the Asian team's sign was a dragon, so going with a (mythological) animal again seemed a good idea. The crane symbolizes longevity and therefore we thought it would be fitting for the TAC - hopefully the crane will make us persevere in our language quests throughout the next year ;)
