---------------

For today's word count I have chosen French (which is one of my better languages). I got estimats of 19.100 lexemes with an old monolingual Micro Robert and 23.100 with a fairly new French-Dansh Gyldendal. And this could have been even more if I hadn't been adamant about ignoring 'compund words', i.e. blanc is ONE lexeme, and it stays like that in spite of the fact that it is impossible to foresee the existance and meaning of combinations like chou blanc, nuit blanche, mariage blanche.

I have checked the dictionaries used before Latin in my recent spate of wordcounts, but most counted words. However my Catalan Larousse count 'words and expressions', so I did a quick check of the total number of lexemes (in the strict sense) on the used pages. It seems that the number of lexemes could be as low as 17.500 (out of approx. 27.000 'words and expressions', and this means that my 13.600 known lexemes are no less than 78% of the total on the relevant pages - I can't wait to check that with a larger dictionary!. My Spanish Langenscheidt also count 'words and expressions', but I can't find my notes from my session with this dictionary.

And one thing more: I have read one chapter of the thesis in Afrikaans about learning difficulties in firstgraders which Mick33 with the overwhelmed brain mentioned in his log. Apparently the current test batteries can't identify these kids before several years later, when it may be too late.

------

Today's wordcount: Afrikaans, using my English-Afrikaans school dictionary from Pharos, which I had to order from S.A. because I couldn't get it from Danish bookstores. It contains 40.000 words in each direction, and surprise surprise, I got an estimated vocabulary of 16.300 words! This was quite unexpected because I didn't even think of learning Afrikaans before last December, my reference language Dutch is also one of the latest additions to my collection and it has been fairly difficult to find anything suitable to read in Afrikaans.

One of the things I have tried is to make a bilingual text based on the beginning of the Bible - one of the few texts that was easy to find in digital form for both languages. And of course I could compare the two languages in this way, but if I had continued for too long I would have incurred the risk of running around speaking like a preacher man (not my style).

One tiny little thing more: during a search for something else (the Lozanov method) I accidentally hit upon a youtube-clip with the wellknown linguist Claude Piron, who among other things extoll the virtues of Esperanto. But I have other plans for this evening, - Esperanto will have to wait.
