When I decided to go to Novi Sad I also decided to try to get a foothold in Serbian. However I then had to push other projects in the background, and the obvious victim was my Irish. But now my Serbian is well underway (though still not at a point where I would dare to speak it), and yesterday evening I once again returned to Harry Potter II in Irish, where I had reached the wand-choosing-Harry episode in Mr. Ollivanders boutique. I read it in conjunction with the same book in English, so the typical pattern is that I first read a couple of sentences in English, then I turn to the Irish version and copies the corresponding sentences while asking myself whether I truly understand each and every word and why it has the form it has. And the strange thing is that after a lapse of almost 5 months I have forgotten a lot of concrete words, but I don't think that my sentence analysis has suffered. Actually I now feel the initial position of the verbs, the use of substantival phrases, the sound changes and funny relative constructions as something almost logical and natural. And given that this is Irish, this feeling feels weird.

Yesterday evening was mainly dedicated to wordlists. I went through N (н) in my old Serbian wordlists, and the funny thing was that my 'loss' still hovers around 20% according to an informal rough calculation. You could expected the percentage to go up to conform with the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve, or go down in accordance with all the time I have spent on that language. Maybe this suggests that I have a natural disposition to not being able to recall 20% of anything I have learnt, no matter what I do.

One thing that has irritated me is that all my dictionaries for Serbian and Croatian are written for Serbians or Croatians - so the grammar sections are dedicated to English, French or Italian. Furthermore the question of perfect versus imperfect verbs is left in the dark - if I hadn't known some typical affixes and endings from Russian and Polish I wouldn't have had a clue as to the aspect of the verbs in the dictionaries, and I'm certainly going to make some false guesses. I do however have one reliable source, namely the Pons "Verbtabellen Kroatisch", but I would prefer having the information in my dictionaries.

I also made wordlists in Greek based on the Greek document collection I found in my heaps of old papers. I have wondered where it comes from, but now I tend to think that the texts have been copied from GLOSS at an early stage of my Greek studies - but at the time they were too difficult. Now I can read them fairly easily, though I'm glad to have the originals and the translations side by side. Maybe I ought to go back to GLOSS to listen too, but there is so much I ought to do and I rarely have my computer open when I work intensively with texts. Greek is actually one of the languages I have had through an A to Z dictionary wordlist treatment (in Cuba last year), but I skipped the repetition rounds, and that was clearly an error.

My current bus-back-home paleontological spree has so far passed through the Triassic in Serbian, the texts I mentioned in Spanish and Catalan (plus a few more), one in Portuguese about the origin of life (Ediacara, Burgess and something in between), graptolites in Italian and a weird Spanish/Italian text about human/dino coexistence based on some images scratched into a stone which somebody in South America got from 'a friend' (a prime example of human guillibility). I have still some unread texts lying around and plan to extend the collection - and maybe also reread the long Russian article about the Snowball Earth hypothesis which I described some time ago in this thread. And maybe even restudy the text in Dutch (or was it Afrikaans?) about fourwinged birds which I also have commented on long ago. My recent perousal of old printouts has brought some nice tidbits back to the surface!

Wow, I have been dreaming about having a book like that in Croatian but had no idea it existed! I think you just solved the problem of what I want for Christmas :)

Thanks for the information. I look forward to refreshing my memory of a number of other lectures and watching those I missed.

In my list of paleontological printouts..

EN: My most surprising discovery yesterday was a long article about paleontology in Bahasa Indonesia and - even more surprising - located on Facebook!!

I am right now washing the third machineful of dirty clothes - or rather the machine is doing it for me, and I have spent the time revising old Serbian wordlists. Yesterday evening I spent most of my time on Greek and Indonesian, though I also watched some Spanish and Serbian TV and listened to the Hungarian Dances and the String Sextet of Brahms while wathing BBC Entertainment with the sound turned down (my cable provider graciously has provided Danish subtitles for a number of Anglophone channels). Serbian is the only language where I have kept my dictionary based wordlists, but I now think it might be worth keeping those I make during similar raids in other languages - but only those based on dictionaries, not those which are based on texts. There I have got the original texts to revert to if I feel some kind of nostalgic urge to do so.

BA I: Di Bahasa Indonesia saya membaca sekarang karangan dari Facebook tentang sejarah bumi.

IT: In questo momento sto vedendo "Passaggio a Nord". All'este.

Apart from that: I have spent the afternoon at the reopened archeological/etnographic museum of Århus: Moesgård. The old museum was quite good, but even without the stone age and medieval period the new museum is in a totally different class. The building is halfway buried in a field near the manor of the same name (now painted in a ghastly pink colour, which the responsible persons claim is historically corect - but then somebody back then surely had a bad taste!). In the lowest part there is so far an exhibition that spans the Bronze age until the Viking age, and here you find treasures like the Grauballe Man, a wellpreserve bog corpse, and the immense collection of weapons found in a moor in the Illerup River Valley - apparently all the weapons of a conquered invasion army which was annihilated were destroyed, whereupon they were thrown into the bog as a gift (with thanks) to the gods. And this happened around 200 AD, with later additions right up to the year 500. Unfortunately nobody in- or outside Scandinavia have written about these fights so we don't even know who the invaders were - but hurray, we won!!!!!!!
