TY: Ich lese zurzeit P.M.

My bus-back-home-from-work is right now an issue of P.M. Historie in German (2/2011, at 4,50€ in Germany). In a few moments it will try to explain me why the Mongols of Djenghis Khan were almost invincible, but time will tell whether it succeeds. Yesterday it tried to explain to me why lots of stone age people (and some that where later) sat down to hack bowl-shaped depressions in rocks around them, and I have still not understood the attraction of that pastime.

The article about the Mongols didn't give much information about the reasons for the strenght of the Mongol army - really only an information about their composite bow which could be shot from a horseback and kill somebody at 300 meters distance. It was somehat more informative about the reasons for the demise of the Mongole empire - mainly dynastic squabbles. The interesting thing is that the Mongol army leader Batu Khan, who just had crushed the old Russian states, stood in Hugary in 1241, ready to do the same thing to the European countries, but then Ogedai Khan died and he returned to Karakorum. The immense Mongol empire was divided into four parts and Europe was saved.

BA I: Saya juga kembali studi saya tentang bahasa Indonesia.

I have restarted my studies of Bahasa Indonesia (which have lain dormant since mid July, before my trip to Italy), and I use a text from the internet about the curious situation that primates seemingly didn't evolve in Africa, but in Asia, and from there they spread to Africa, where the evolution of mankind later took place.

I have spent most of the weekend on two-day meeting in my travel club, and since I came back home I have been scanning old photoes from my mother's collection so that she can see them on her computer. So that has limited my study opportunities, but not to the extent that I couldn't watch TV. On Swedish TV I have watched an interview with 3 young persons who had studied jiddisch. One had studied it in Lund i Sweden, another in the USA and I have forgotten where the third did his stint. On of the things they spoke about was the influx of loanwords in Jiddissch - and in particular the variations that appear because people adopt words from different languages. Even though I don't study this languages I know the problem from other 'cross-border' languages like Esperanto. The loan word question popped up again later when I watched the show "Les Chéries de 'Anne" at TV5, this time with a young man from Niger, Maname, as her guest. It was a show of the same kind as those I watch at BBC E from the Apollo theatre, but in French, not English. OK, I simply couldn't remember a French word for this - for me it is simply "stand up". Even a sketch is a "sketch".

Having read about Fasulye's animal name project I gave her a reference to the list of animals at the homepage of the Zoo in Copenhagen (which she visited in July). But I doubt that such a list is the best place to learn new names - something with more details would be better for that. However once you know some animal names it may be useful for repetition. And many other zoos have also published their lists. After visits to more than 420 zoos and aquaria I know a fair number of animal species by name, especially in countries with many such places. But it is but a wee part of the total number of animal names. And now I'm not speaking about the 1.000.000 or so scientifically named bacteria species in the world, just about those critters I might find in a zoo or a national park.

Having thought about my deficiencies in knowledge about animal names in 'my' languages I came to think about some else: I saw some billboards in Barcelona zoo about a new 'marine zoo' when I visited that zoo a couple of years ago. Now I visited it again this year in June, but didn't see anything about the project. So I consulted the internet and found out that it actually is supposed to open in 2014. I'll come to visit both zoos, the old and the new (plus the aquarium), but only when I am psoitive that it actually is going to open.

When I visited Rome in Rome I wanted to see the new aquarium in EUR if it had opened. But no, at the tourist information in the arrivals hall of Ciampino airport I was told that the aquarium wasn't ready yet - and afterwards I have found out that the current estimate says something like first half of 2012. And one shock more: the world-famous "Museo Nazionale delle Paste Alimentari" is currently closed for restoration works (new ketchup??). Nevertheless my visite to Rome wasn't totally wasted: I did see the renovated zoo "Bioparco" (plus a couple of minor places like the Museo Nazionale Romano, Pantheon, the Vatican museums, the Trevi fountain and Stazione Termini).
