I have been on tour through Western Jutland by train this weekend, and in the train I have of course had to read a few texts in a number of languages, but I only did some real study during my evening in the town Varde, and there I read and retranslated a fairly long article about Polyglots ("Полиглоты - кто они?" - Polyglots - who are they?), which I found through Google on as unexpected a place as a Russian Esperanto site. The article was quite interesting, although with some minor errors (like calling the famous Italian linguist and polyglot Tagliavini Tagliavani). The article has however a curious habit of first exaggerating the claims of a person without reservations, and then a few lines further on a more sober version is given. This is the case with the wellknown cardinal Mezzofanti, but also with the less known Danish language genius Rasmus Rask (1787-1832), who first is accredited with no less than 230 languages (!! - all alarm bells should toll like mad here!), but just a few lines further down he is included in a group of persons who all (!) spoke exactly 28 languages - the other two are sir John Bowring ( 1792-1872) and Harold Williams (1876-1928). The extreme precision is suspicious, but Rasmus Rask definitely was an extraordinary person, who deserves a bit of publicity - however I'll write that piece of eulogy in the subforum concerned with dead and living polyglots, not here in my own log thread where the information will drown pitifully and never be seen again by any human being.

Oh my, 26 of August since last entry here. But I have not been procrastinating, except maybe during the weekend where I was on a family weekend which included activities like painting my mother's garden shed, participation in conversations in Danish and visits to two museums. But not much study, except some Polish vocabulary (I have reached k-).

Cowper.

Briareos was a hekatoncheir, that is a beast from the Greek mythology with 100 arms and fifty heads and a bad temper. He (or it) was born as a child of Heaven and Earth (i.e. offspring of the gods of the first generation and as such a cousin of the Titans, but not a titan himself). The three archaic monsters of this species never really became popular with the classical Greeks, maybe because they would be difficult to depict. And ugly.

* I just noticed that a millipede in Greek is called the equivalent of a fortyfeet, which is much more realistic.

I have more or less done my usual routines the last couple of evenings, except Tuesday where I managed to watch almost a whole evening of TV without any English programs. This included Swedish, Norwegian and German, and one German program actually featured people from the Netherlands - although everytime they spoke Dutch some German bloke started babbling. The two languages I really would like to have here and now on TV is Dutch and Russian, but my cable provider doesn't provide any of these two. Polish is also on the list, and there is a Polish program listed which I could subscribe to ... but right now I doubt that I would understand much.

I have also done my stint with the Irish Harry Potter I, whereas the Latin Potter II has been lying idaly around beneath my ROmanina guide to Schönbrunn since last week. And then I have of course done some wordlists - lately in Indonesian, Irish, Russian, Polish and Icelandic. For Icelandic there is the special problem that I'm using my Iðunnar Orðabók, which is fairly comprehensive - so with too many words available I proceed slowly through the alphabet. In the Icelandic passage above I comments on a number of false friends between Icelandic and Danish, but even with those around it is certainly a boon to know some Danish (and other Scandinavian languages). For instance I'm certain I won't forget the Icelandic word "barnæska" (childhood) precisely because it sounds almost like a box for children in Danish.

I had to look up "childhood" in Danish after that, and got "Bårndom", which makes sense
from an Enlish speaker's point of view as we have words ending in -dom that mean "state
of being -" (kingdom is slightly different, I guess, but not too far away). "Dom" from
Old Norse, according to Wiktionary.
