In the German Wikipedia there is a good summary about all this, plus a page about the main centres of this kind of behaviour. A quote from the latter:

Och Iversen! Du und deine Wikipedia! He! He! ;-D

So, was sollte ich sonst tun?

Ja, in diesem Fall findest du mit Sicherheit keine sehr wertvolle Infos in einem 'peer reviewed journal'...! :-0

Sometimes the television catches up with our discussions here in a strange way. This evening I first saw an excellent program at Wild Nat Geo about the history of the continents, with references to some of the dramatic events in the history that we discussed a couple of days ago, before we all got engulfed into the world of carnivals.

After that I saw a program called "Mardi gras" on Travel Channel, which reminded us of the origins of this bad habit and then took us through the current hotspots. The oldest custom of this kind was ascribed to the Babylonians, followed by drunk Greeks and the mighty Romans that invented the cart from which you could throw things, the "carrum navalis" (whence the name 'carnival'). Later the Venetians took up the idea of masquerades in 1268, but Napoleon didn't like them, and il Carnivale di Venezia were only revived in 1979 to lure some visitors to the town in the sluggish month of February. But there are now carnivals popping up all over the world, and most of them incorporate that venerable Roman idea of big decorated waggons moving slowly through the streets with drunk people and big loudspeakers aboard. In some (mostly Anglophone) places these monsters are called 'floats'.

-------

The Afrikaans section is about a series of supercontinents, i.e. continents that comprised all land masses of the Earth during their existence, and the reason that I write it in something vaguely resembling Afrikaans is that some of the oldest rock fragments are actually found in South Africa. I have seen it on television, so it must be true.

The rest is just a rant in French about carnivals, especially about the big one in Fort-de-France, Martinique (that's a place somewhere in France). I had once arranged a holiday there without checking the carnival calendar. Bad planning, bad timing, and a hotel right beside the main parade ground in Fort-de France. O my GOD, as the Americans always say..

Good scientific magazines will let not only editors, but also specialists in the different fields judge the content of submitted articles on a purely scientific basis, and that's called a peer review. It is certainly a good idea, even though errors can slip through or qualified articles can be rejected because of hostile reviewers.

The reviewers can sometimes find flaws that the author had overlooked or underestimated. A famous case is Wiles' proof of Fermat's famous last theorem, where a reviewer discovered an error in the first version of the proof. Wiles spent a long time to correct this error and submitted the article once again, after which he was justly hailed as a mathematical genius.

However there are also numerous cases where a magazine has refused articles that represented real scientific breakthroughs, - and the worrisome thought is that we only hear about this if the article later has been accepted by another acknowledged magazine, or more evidence has been found by others later - as in the case of Alfred Wegener, who was ridiculed when he publicized his ideas about continental drift. Heaven knows how many perfectly good articles didn't get published or were published in media that snobbish or paranoid collegues wouldn't even touch.

My personally opinion is that it is your damned duty as a scientist to be be on the outlook for interesting ideas anytime and everywhere, but always with a sound dose of scepticism. And that includes secondhand material, Wikipedia and the things we write here, even it can't be used as reference material in a scientific context.
