Fasulye has been to Venlo today and bought a book about paleontology, and in this book the author has had some misgivings about the popular theory that the Chicxulub meteor killed the dinosaurs. There can't be no doubt that it is problematic to get a large meteor in your head, and it is a proven fact that it spread dust and poisonous gases from the site in Mexico all over the planet. On the other hand it has also been demonstrated that the number of dinosaur species was falling long before the event, and when the impact happened there had also for a long time been severe volcanic activity in the Northern part of India (which had just crashed into Asiam leading to the formation of the Himalayas). There is even evidence that in certain sites there is typical Cretaceaous fauna both under and above a thin layer of globules (small glass drops formed during the meteor crash), with the extinction zone (the so called kt-zone) lying above the others. My problem is that something must have happened at the time of KT layer, and it must have happened rather suddenly. If it wasn't a meteor fall on toop of a periode of devastating volcanic activity and other calamities, what then?

Below a copy of the head of a robust Australopithecine from the Geological museum of Copenhagen, - no wonder that one specimen (originally named 'zinjanthropus boisei') was inofficially dubbed "nutcracker man":

LAT: Hodie munus grave perfeci.

Hic vocabulum "scrinium" inveni, quod in vocabulario "New College" quam 'case for scrolls, letter case, portfolium' datur. Heureka. Tamen objecta innumerabila in habitatio meo habeo sine nominibus latinis. Quid facere?

-------------

I have spent the morning on a monumental task: sorting my photocopies and wordlists and other papers according to languages and type, and I have put them into a heap of portfolios which I bought yesterday (though I clearly didn't buy enough).

For some reason I wanted to write this proclamation in Latin, and my first problem was to find a suitable word for 'port folio'. I first thought of using the Italian word "cartella" which sounded reasonably Latin, but then I remembered that the word 'folder' is used for computers, and I looked it up in a list with proposed Latin computer terms, and here I found "scrinium" which in my cheap, but excellent "New College" dictionary was translated as 'case for scrolls, letter case, portfolium'. Just perfect, problem solved. Then I thought about the countless other objects in my flat that weren't know to the Romans (and not even to the medieval monks that carried on the torch), for instance my beloved television set. My German Neolatin dictionary proposes "instrumentum televisificum". Forget it, no practically minded Roman would use that construction. My guess is that they would say "televisor", but I'm open to other equally short proposals. The phenomenon 'TV watching' is given a Greek translation, "telehorasis", which would be a common solution for the Romans (who stole left, right and centre from the Greeks), but "televisio" is good enough for me. And the logical verb is of course "televidere".

I could carry on with this, but the main idea is that the Romans and the monks are gone, now the task of updating Latin pertains to those who try to keep it as a living language, with or without native speakers.

* ---> Словообразование

From Russian I went on to Serbian - though it isn't a purely Serbian study now, as I have found out that my only Cyrillic dictionary (Italian <--> Servian) simply is too small. I have bought a quite new and big Croatian <--> English dictionary, but mostly my old Serbocroat <--> English from the 70s are enough to crack the words I meet in my printouts. However today I didn't try to read anything, but just studied my Essential Serbian grammar by Lisa Hammond, and so far it looks promising. I reordered the cases of the nouns so as to be in the same order as in Russian (which isn't that of most Russian grammars), and as expected the system looked like a simplified version of the Russian system. But then I proceeded to the adjectives, and a few funny details popped up. Apparently Serbian has both definite and indefinite adjectives (but no articles), though in most cases the forms are the same. I also had a brief look at the verbs, where half the past tense forms have become obsolete. However one of the surviving past tenses is called aorist, which reminds me of Greek, but also of Bulgarian where the verbal system is exceedingly complex because the perfect/imperfect distinction of Russian is combined with the imperfect/aorist distinction of Greek. Time will tell if the Serbs and the Croats have the same combination.

-----

In the Russian section I just mention that during my clean-up action earlier today I found a piece of paper with imperfect/perfect verb pairs combined with different prefixes (those delicious 'fixes are the soul of the Russian language). I made it long ago, but now I spent a couple of hourse extending the collection. The troublesome thing is that I once bought a book that should save me this task, but that pile of junk didn't even separate perfective and imperfective verbs which quite simply makes it worthless. Don't buy "Roots of the Russian Language".

3. несовершенный вид и глаголы совершенного вида -- you must use either "несовершенный [вид] и совершенный вид" or "глаголы несовершенного [вида] и совершенного вида"

In this sentence the word "работа" sounds bad. It rarely used for designation books. It is better to say, for example, "Так что не покупайте эту халтуру, "Roots of the Russian Language"".

Probably, you want to say "Словообразование с помощью аффиксов".
