Again thank you for the corrections, - I studied them very closely last time and I'll do the same now, not least the sentence that you have declared totally illegal. And I will have to watch my case endings more closely, - in for instance "удовольствием (и радостью)" it is idiotic that I write the first word in the correct case and then forget to konjugate the second (which I had to look up in a dictionary).

As for the letter 'ë' you give the answer yourself: I can see that many if not most of my written sources just use 'e', and I have just followed in the footsteps of these sources. It is basically a question of correctness against a widespread simplification.

So nu fehlt mi blots 20 Minuten, ok dat ward sachts noch en-twee Johren duern die to kriegen.

--------

While NDR had talkshows in Low German I often listened to them. But suddenly they stopped. Instead NDR promised to show shorter programs, including reports from Plattschnacker around the Globe. After a short while that also stopped, but NDR said goodbye with a 4-hour night show in Low German. I recorded it on tape, but when I transferred it to another tape I cut out the High-german babble and I also dropped some of the endless interviews with old people from the countryside - it became a little too much with all that turf diffing. But that meant that I was left with 38 minytres on the tape, - and it has taken me a year waiting for some more Platt. Today I got 20 minutes from a comedy show, and I suppose that I'll have to wait a year or two more to fill up the remaining 20 minutes. And all this trouble just because NDR has decided to cut out any reference to the dialect - or rather language - of Northern Germany. But in a sense I don't blame them, - references to the Danish dialects in Danish television are equally rare. It seems that people in most places have simply given up learning and speaking and even understanding the dialects.

Apart from that: I have also spent 3 hours watching a transmission from the annual carnival festivities of Braunschweig, Germany, allegedly the largest in the Northern part of the country. And yesterday I watched the quiz "Genial daneben" in SAT and the participiants were also merrily carnival-clad. It is amazing that the Germans, who otherwise are supposed to be reasonable and serious people go totally berserk once every year in the carnival season, - almost on a par with the Brasilians even though these have much better weather for their parades.

Finally: I have excavated my one and only travel magazine in Afrikaans from the piles of paper and books that surround me, and now I'm going to use it as night table reading. My reading in that language is fairly fluent, but in order to get better at distinguishing between Afrikaans, Dutch, Low and High German I'm also going to copy some of the text by hand. I may even learn some, - for instance there is an article about how you should behave in the presence of wild anmials, so next time there are rhinos and wild buffalos and lions on my way to the local supermarket I know what to do.

Iversen, you should make sure to read the Afrikaans article quickly and thoroughly.
I've heard that Danish Rhinos have been particularly fierce lately...

NL: Klasse!

I remember hearing that the most spectacular German carnival takes place in Cologne. Sadly this carnival is one of the things I missed seeing during my time in Germany, as I was living in Bavaria!
(Having said that, I believe they have something vaguely similiar in Munich called 'Fasching'..?)

Das passende Vokabular dazu:

Karneval (Rheinland) = Fasching (Oberbayern) = Allemannische Fastnacht (Baden-Würtemberg)

Fasching is the same thing as Karneval, and there is a third word "Fastnacht", - and even a fourth "Fastelovend" in Kölsch (the dialekt of Köln). In Platt you could also use the words Faslaomt or Faslam. This is interesting because the old word in Danish is "Fastelavn", so that would probably be a loanword from Low German. However we have later imported the word 'Karneval', but this kind of tohu-bohu has never become as popular here as in Germany, probably because the Catholic church hasn't got many followers here. Here it is purely a feeble copy of the Brasilian variety, and our climate isn't really hot enough at this time of the year to warrant seminude dancing in the streets.

In the German Wikipedia there is a good summary about all this, plus a page about the main centres of this kind of behaviour. A quote from the latter:

Och Iversen! Du und deine Wikipedia! He! He! ;-D

(Es dauert auch mehrere Tage, oder?)
