I hope that you don't mind, but i've decided to adopt your multi-lingual journal ideas into my own log.

good luck during 2009, i'm also planning to learn Portuguese and Russian as part of my TAC.

On the contrary, I have already found out that it feels much more logical to use my log as an exercise instead of just as a report, and I hope that more people will follow the example - also in those languages that I can't read (yet).

First, I'm annoyed with the German TV station NDR because it has stopped its programs in Low German.

Poor Low German :-(
Poor walloon as well: it has only about an half hour's programme but nobody want to watch.

ENG: Right now I'm watching Explorer in English, and they are speaking about the planned 20 km long bridge from Rødby in Denmark to Fehmarn in Germany. That won't be cheap!

IT: Pausa.

---------

The Russian part is just a reference to something as rare as a Russian history book with printed accents.

Then I write something about the tendency to drop the final consonants in certain German dialects, as evidenced by the utterances in the numerous TV programs from German zoos. Plus I tell about my short, but glorious history as a German TV star. It was in December, it was bitterly cold and the rain poured down, and the number of other guests in Leipzig zoo was nothing to write home about. And yet there was this desperate German TV-team who had to film their Christmas show ... so I was simply kidnapped and stuffed into a big red Father Christmas attire with a white beard, and they gave me a string of sentences to memorize. The amazing thing is that my performance actually was shown, and I have it somewhere on a VHS tape.

Then I mention that I have counted my Italian wordstock, which apparently should hover around 20.500 words. But such a result is heavily dependent on the choice of dictionary (and as explained in the log a couple of days ago also on the randomly selected pages) so the actual value shouldn't be taken at face value. This isn't science.

Finally I tell about reading parts of two books about French slang, one from 1977 and the other from 1995. I shall refrain from trying to translate my comments about that subject into English, but I can assure you that French popular sayings are every bit as colorful as their English counterparts.

... ---> according to the Catalan version of Wiki the language with most blogs after English (with 1.958.443) is CATALAN!!!! (with allegedly 123.320, ahead of French with 83.950. I thought football ('soccer') was the national sport of Catalunya, but instead it seems to be blogging. If you can believe those numbers, that is...

IT: Anch'io preferisco i dizinonarii bilinguali dei dizinonari monolinguali.

:-(, ich empfehle dir daher lieber die englische Orignalausgabe: "The Atlas of the Prehistoric World", 1999, Marshall Publishing, London.

I have only one book about dinosaurs: "Dinosaur Databook" (The Diagram group 1990), but 26 VHS tapes with paleontological TV programs, covering the whole saga from the creation of the Earth and Precambrium up to the current mass-extinction,

-----

The Dutch section of this post tells about the 'red' dictionaries from Gyldendal, which totally dominate the Danish market. But I have also bought dictionaries with other base languages, mostly German and English, and even some monolingual dictionaries in spite of my unrepentant preference for bilingual dictionaries.

The short Russian section reveals that I have spent a whole evening listening to the earhangers of Nikolai Rimskij-Korsakov, including the famous Sheherazade. Besides I have read a bit in my accented Russian history (described earlier in this log), and I have copied a text from the GLOSS site about the new railway from Groznyj to Moscow (and no, I'm not going to discuss politics here). It has struck me that Russian sometimes has the same free word order as Latin - a literal translation of the quoted passage above would be something like "train now us new they-gave". Which also exemplifies one of the problems that those who choose to study Russian face.

EN: Im looking forward to any science on DVD, because science in general is one of my interests. Sometimes, if I am lucky, I can find material spoken in English with subtitles in Dutch in the Netherlands. This is also a good language excercise. So far I haven't found any paleontlogy on DVD, but I for example I have a good docu "The march of the Penguins" spoken in Dutch by a Flemish speaker. I would like to have some astronomy (which is my favourite science subject) in English on DVD, but these DVDs are so expensive(!) that I have given it up searching in this direction.
