IT: Purtroppo non ho mai visto l'aurora borealis.

----------

Unfortunately I have never seen the Northern lights, - they are mostly seen during the winter where the sun never gets over the horizon and it is terribly cold. I have visited the Northernmost part of Norway during the summer, where the climate is much more pleasant, but then the sun stays on the sky all night, and therefore you can't expect to see any Northern lights. When I visited Rovaniami the first time I walked up to the roadside sign that should indicate the Polar cercle, so they did cheat me! But the second time I knew about this and I took a bus to the airport, and later I even took the Father Christmas Express train(!) to Kemijärvi, a smaller town that is well above the Polar Circle. I haven't visited the Galapagos Islands, - it is very expensive even if you already have reached Ecuador. Instead I stayed in the mountains. Here I visited a town called Baños, which had officially been evacuated and there were almost no turists, - even though the local people had return against the orders of the government. I couldn't buy any excursions here, so instead I just started walking towards the East. I walked for 8 hours, but the last part of this walk went through a national park where I couldn't buy anything to drink - so after just 45 km or so I jumped into a bus to the nearest town. Btw the Ecuadorians have skipped their own currency and use US greenbacks instead - probably the most dirty and mucked up dollar bills you can find anywhere.

I have already once written about exoplanets today (planets outside the Solar system). But I read an article in a French popular scientific magazine on my way back from work today, and there I found an article about exoplanets. Apparently the astronomers have now found more than 350, but almost all of them are very duifferent from the Earth, and they represent systems that are very different from ours - some have enormes planets close to the star instead of rocky planwets like the Earth, or they have extremely elliptic circuits or they are circling almost extinct stars. Apart from looking for these planets the astronomers have also made lots of simulations of the formation of solar systems, and one member of a group that have made hundreds of such simulations makes this announcement: "in our simulations systems like ours are formed when the protoplanetary disk disappears in exactly the same moment that the gigant planets have been formed, which is a very special case". So even if the planetary systems aren't too rare it would be fairly unlikely to find a système like the one around the sun, and consequently it will be fairly unlikely to find another planet with a suitable size, rocky surface, liquid water and not too many meteors. I feel sorry for those who still believe that we will eventually find extraterrestrial life - the chances were already slim and have now been limited even more by these calculations.

--------

I have promised to make a list with the names of the planets in Greek. In most European languages the planets are named after the Roman gods, but the Greek gods are much more fun, so it isn't strange that the Greeks prefer naming the planets after their own gods. Roman gods were more like public servants, each had his/her own job to do, and throughout most of the Republican periode the rather fantasy-impaired Romans were content with that. But with time they wanted something more entertaining and colourful, and then they looked for parallels in the Greek mythology (the Romans also stole the Greek sculptures, not to speak about anything else that could be carted to Rome).

The Greek names for the planets follow closely those old identifications:

1. Hermes = Mercurius - the gods' messenger and god for the thiefs (and probably also for CEOs, I presume)
2. Aphrodite = Venus - goddess for love, washed ashore in Cyprus (and we haven't had a quiet moment since that)
3. Ge (Gaia) = Terra (the Earth) - the mother Earth-goddess of the 1. generation af Greek gods after Chaos, according to Hesiodos
4. Ares = Mars - god for bloody war (Athena was responsible for the socalled art of war)
5. 'Thias' (Zeus) = Jupiter - god for the heavens, the boss of all the Olympean gods (in the 3. generation)
6. Kronos = Saturnus - god for time (chronology!), son of Uranus and Gaia, father to the Olympean gods
7. Uranos = Uranus - god of the heavens (or rather the heavens himself) in the first generation of gods
8. Poseidonas = Neptunus - the seagod, brother to Zeus

Hades = Pluton - god of the underworld (and Mickey Mouse's dog) - isn't defined as a proper planet anymore after the find of Eris (goddess of strife, and yes, there was a bit of turbulence at this decision) - the astronomers didn't want so many small ridiculous planets running around out there in the darkness, so they degraded poor Pluto.

A this place I simply have to mention a splendid orchestral work by Gustav Holst, the Planets, - which indeed became so popular that the composer himself got sick and tired of always being reminded of this one work. But who else would have heard about Holst if he hadn't written this masterpiece?

Here are the seven movements, - noticed that Pluto wasn't found yet in 1916, and that the order of the inner planets has been changed for artistic reason:

1. Mars*, the Bringer of War
2. Venus, the Bringer of Peace
3. Mercury, the Winged Messenger
4. Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity
5. Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age
6. Uranus, the Magician
7. Neptune, the Mystic

What's very funny about Greek's the name of the country in Greek is helada, which means in Spanish 'frozen'. hahahaha! It's not very frozen at all LOL!!! But hot especially in the summer.

Guldhornene

     paa Runestene
     blandt smuldnede Bene.

They yearn and seek
in olden bookes
in opened mounds
with gazing eye <-- NB singular !?
on swords and shields
in moulden banks,
on Runic stones
among mouldering bones

     Oltids Bedrifter

Olden times' deeds,
sensed, conjure,
but in Darkness they cover themselves,
the olde scriptures.
The gaze gazes,
the thought confuses itself

15     I Taage de famle.

give us a gleam back!

osv. osv.
and so forth and so forth ....

until the 'Hallows' again vanish
(Oehlenschläger postulate that the Olde Gods wanted them back, but I'm somewhat more prosaic, - I think the goldsmith got the idea totally by himself..)
