KOREKTITA VERSIO:

Ekzemple vi cxiam skribis: "Mardo mi faris tion... Dimancxo mi faris tion..." sed devas esti "Marde" kaj "Dimancxe" kun "e".

Life is more than Esperanto - and even more than just plain English. For example there still is a language called French, and for the moment I'm reading a magazine about the ancient inhabitants of the area between Tigris and Euphrates, from the Sumérians to the Persians. The Sumerians were probably the first people to evolve a writing system (followed by the Egyptians), and this system, the cuneiforme, was adopted by later powers like the Assyrians and Babylonians in spite of massive differences between their languages. And the result was as complicated as the Japanese writing system.

ESP: Nun mi amuzas min, ke vi komparis du tute identikajn tekstojn!

"Mi oni petis" estas certe eraro, cxar "mi" estas nominativo kaj "oni" estas ankaux nominativo. Du nominativaj pronomoj en unu frazo ne eblas.

Do:

"Kiam oni petis al mi + infinitivo"

"Kiam oni petis min + infinitivo"

> Mi revenis kaj partoprenis en kunsido por unuafojaj partoprenantoj.

> Mi do adaptos nian korektitan version!

I have just returned from a modest 12 day trip to Myanmar - and no, I haven't learned the local language(s), but I have bought a small Myanmar-English dictionary for 1000 kyat (slightly above 1 €) and a ditto English-Myanmar one from Thalun Bookstore for a few kyats more plus a Burmese language survival kit from Lonely Planet in an antique edition from 1988. I have read the grammatical section and skimmed the rest of this minimalistic book, but I hope there are better and newer language guides to the main language of this country.

I sometimes wonder why people who write such grammatical introductions don't consistently use contrastive examples and hyperliteral translations, and why they aren't more systematic in their explanations.

For instance on p. 16 "In Burmese adjectives work exactly like verbs: they come after the noun, and are followed by various verb particles. For this reason there is no equivalent of the verb "to be" in a sentence with an adjective in Burmese".

Well, this obviously applies to 'adjective-verbs' where the word has a function similar to a subject predicative (almost like in Russian, where the copula verb also typically is missing). But what about attributive uses? The explanation follows:

"To put an adjective-verb with a noun in Burmese there are two possibilities: a few colour and size adjectives can be stuck on after the noun. Any adjective can be the verb in a relative clause before the noun, the relative clause being marked by the té/dé between the verb and following noun."

If I didn't know some Bahasa this would be totally opaque to me, but it seems to me that it might be a system like the one in Bahasa, where an attributive phrase is coupled to the noun with the word "yang" and contains either a verb (with added sentence parts) or a noun or adjective. I.e. something that includes the parallel to our relative phrases, but also several other kinds of constructions. However I still find it puzzling that the verb suddenly is reintroduced - after all, didn't we just speak about adjectives that in themselves have a verbal role? The examples are (in a slightly different order):

This person comes. di lu lade
This person is big. di lu cide
the person who comes ladé lu

a white house einbyu
a house that is white hpyudé ein

(the hp is an aspirated partner to the b in the previous example)

The grammatical section uses romanized spellings - and there are quite a number of different systems for that - but in the rest of booklet and in the two dictionaries the special Burmese alphabet is used. I just haven't found it yet in the phrasebook, which is slightly puzzling. However I did manage to buy a T-shirt with the whole alphabet..

Besides I carried an assorted hotch-potch of old printouts in different languages with me in my very limited luggage, plus an old Langenscheidt Modern Greek - German dictionaries. And yes, I did manage to find time for a few wordlists, which I used for wordlists with some 400 words.

Your post was way too short given all the interesting stuff you must have seen there. I hope you write some more about it.
