Bonjour Iversen,

francophone, soit encore vivant.

Yesterday I read some printouts from Dina Kontseva's blog in the bus back home, and later I listened to some of the videos in her blog - but mostly just the beginning because the sound was skewed towards the left in all the conversations with other Russian participants in the Moscow language learning conference - only the interviews with Western participants were equalized. Nevertheless, this was the first time in April I have listened to Russian speech.

Yesterday (Saturday) I went to my office to get some programming done without being disturbed by evil neighbours or benign collegues. In hindsight it may seem paradoxical that I can listen to things on Youtube while doing some complicated programming, whereas collegues speaking or noise from the devil's lair disrupt my thinking. One important difference is that there is a shut-up button on my computers. But Youtube has introduced a very disturbing form at for their advertisement: screaming and howling and singing liars which I have to endure for 3,4,5... seconds before I can make them disappear. This means that a smooth shift from one video to another isn't always possible, and then the disturbance factor suddenly is there again. I simply don't understand how human beings can be induced to buy anything by being hit in the head with an enervating noise which they can turn down but not kill on the spot. But Youtube is still my best bet for finding an endless supply of selfchosen distractions. In contrast TV is going steadily downhill. For instance Discovery was once one of my favorite programs, but nowadays the station seems to be run by ADHD sufferers and adrenaline junkies. And the selection of channels I can get through my cable TV provider is apparently chosen by and for braindead coach potatoes. I have a hard time believing that Raiuno is the best program from Italy, but it is the only one offered - and I feel cheated because I have to pay for hours of worthless junk in the hope that Super Quark or Passaggio all'Oveste once in a blue moon might turn up on the screen.

And then the only solution is the internet, where I actually can search for the kind of things I want to watch and listen to and read.

Yesterday I watched David Mansaray's megamulti interview with a whole screenful of polyglots. It was partially marred by background noises - apparently somebody overheard Steve K's desperate plea for using the mute button. But it struck me that it would be more productive to listen to stuff in other languages than English, so I tapped "scienza" into the search field of Youtube and spent the rest of the evening listening to 10-15 minutes videos about physics in Italian - the kind of stuff which is so rare on Raiuno.

IR: Cé go raibh mé fós sa bhaile inné, staidéar mé freisin leathanach eile de Harry Potter. Chonaic mé ar maidin seo físeán mar gheall ar an nGaeilge - den chuid is mó i mBéarla, ach le hagallaimh le daoine ó thar lear a bhfuil an teanga a fhoghlaim. Mar sin, is féidir!

I try to get through my all languages on a regular basis, and today I have searched for Dutch content on the internet. When I discovered that Dutch actually was understandable (which happened rather suddenly) my key to the language was AVRO Museum TV. But alas, today's AVRO TV is a shadow of what it once was, and even though I did find a 40 minut long cultural program half of the time was wasted on ugly music and after that there was an interview with a ballet choreographer from England (OK, he spoke fluent Dutch, but ballet isn't my thing). Then I tried BVN's homepage. BVN is a Flemish/Dutch program which I know from Astra, but it only has microscopic clips - two clips of less than a minute about the current eruption of Popocatepetl in Mexico and 2.39 minut about the reopening of the Rijksmuseum, which has been closed for 10 years (against the planned 4 years) - at least Queen Beatrix get the chance to reopen it before her abdication the 30. april.

PS: Youtube has a few clips in Dutch about science, for instance here, so I won't die of linguistic starvation.

Yesterday evening I watched TV in English so no language learning there, unfortunately. But I had a busy evening doing wordlists and text copies with notes. In Russian I'im still stuck in the middle of "по-", and I only got through something like 40 words. But I copied and studied one text in Russian about conspiration theories after the meteorite fall at Chelyabinsk, a chapter in my Greek guide to Athens about the area around Odos Venizelou (where among other things you find the university of Athens and where I bought my Routledge grammar), and finally I also got through the passage post abductionem Harrii in my Latin translation of Harry Potter II.

All three languages are right now at the level where I still can find unknown words, but I could also read the texts without a dictionary if I was willing to skip a number of obscure passages. And at this level it is not really necessary to use a bilingual edition, but nevertheless I used a bilingual printout for the Russian text, a monolingual guidebook for the Greek one and two parallel books for Latin. At this level, where a translation still is relevant but not absolutely essential, I would also put things like (Western) Frisian, Icelandic, Old Norse, Old French and Old Occitan and maybe some Italian dialects. Below it you would definitely find Old English and Modern Irish, whereas I see the first signs that Bahasa Indonesia is moving up into the group above - i.e. sometimes I can read a whole line without looking anything up. And then there are of course all the Slavic languages apart from Russian. I find Serbian and Croatian almost understandable (with a dictionary), Polish and Bulgarian slightly more difficult and Czech must be the worst of the lot, heaven knows why (unless it is the pronunciation which I haven't studied).

I have added the following passage to the first page of this thread: "UPDATE: I have stopped making the monthly summaries. After all the thread which contained them got buried under tons of other log files within a day or so and then nobody would read the summaries. If you want to delve into the contents of this immensely long thread then just pick a random spot and see what happens." Actually I stopped making those summaries long ago, but since then the 'burial speed' has actually increased because you guys are so active writing log entries.

However it is also long time since I last made a video for Youtube. I had a project based on the idea that I would speak in different languages about my paintings, but it didn't seem that it caught on with the general public and therefore I dropped the idea. And since then I haven't made videos. But somehow I still get new subscriptions to my channel every day, and I simply don't understand why.
