------------------

In the preceding post Fasulye writes about French podcast with scientific themes (I suggested some sites in another thread). The funny thing is that I still haven't tried Itunes and podcasts myself, - I survive on TV, internet TV, videoclips and written sources. But it was easy to find the podcasts through Google, because I'm used to searching for other things. I have written something about using the advanced utilities of Google to find interesting stuff on the internet: you can limits the searches to one language (include some of those that the system still can't translate). But you can also limit them to one site, and if that is our foroum then you will find the exact pages in a long thread instead just the whole thread, which is the way the inbuilt search facility works. And in spite of their imperfections even the translations can be useful. Sometimes I ask myself how it was possible to learn languages before the advent of Google. But sometimes I also ask myself why we should learn languages, if Google can learn them faster than we can. In a sens e I'm glad that the translations still aren't good enough to be totally trustworthy, - that still leaves some space for us.

----

I spend most of the day doing other things than tending to my languages, but when I at long last got time do something about that I used the Google method: I limited Google to (Modern) Greek and fed it with the name 'Hesiod'. Hesiod lived midway between Homer and the classical authors of the golden age, and his chef-d'oeuvre is the Theogony, which describes the different generations of Greek gods. but his version isn't quite the one I'm used to: according to mr. Hesiod there first was Chaos and mum Earth and Love, and they weren't born at all but just appeared out of the blue. And then came Darkness and the Night, and soon after that I lost patience with this confused nonsense.

Instead I found a modern homepage where the correct story is told. First there was Chaos, and then the first generations of gods came: Gaia (Ge) and Uranus (the Earth and the Sky), and they got an avalanche of children, first and foremost the Titans. Among those the most important was Kronos, who some day where he was in a bad mood castrated his poppa and kicked him down into a bottomless dark pit called Tartaros. Then he married his sister Rhea and got a lot of children with her, which he promptly swallowed one after the other. But Rhea was non happy about this and hid their youngest son Zeus in a cave on Crete, which every guide on the island will be more than happy to show you. When Zeus had grown big and strong by drinking the milk of the goat Amalthea he came back and kicked his poppa rather hard in the butt and gave him a laxative that made him regurgitate the rest of the children. And then Zeus married his own sister Hera and got a lot of children - though mostly with other women. Look, that's how a real mythology should look like, and mr. Hesiodos should not come here and spread confusion!

In Switzerland I think that the French is very similar with the French in France, but I know that they say the numbers like we say them in Belgium. Maybe it's a good idea that you use this numbers and not the French ones (for 70 and 90, also all the numbers for example 71,72 .... 93, 94 etc). In Belgium we've the same nnumber than in France for 80, but I think that in switzerland they've a different one, you have to discover. They would understand the French ones (all the francophones know that in France they say those complicated 70 and 90).
