-----------

I am not going to write about Tagalog or Cebuan today. Instead I have some remarks inspired by the language guides that I have written about in my previous posts. First, I have found the very exact translations in the first 30 pages or so of the Lonely P guide to Filipino very useful. Precisely because they aren't written to conform with English language patterns they can demonstrate very clearly the structures of the foreign language, in this case Filipino (alias Tagalog) - this is even more important with languages that have a structure that is so different from what I am used to. In fact I have always used hyperliteral translation made by myself as a means to discover the structures of new languages. The ironical twist to this method is that I have lately started to make these translations from texts that I had in bilingual versions because I then could avoid the worst translation mistakes, - but the fact that I had to made my own translations just show that even the best 'normal' translations aren't literal enough to really show you the role of each single word in the original. You need hyperliteral translations for that.

The other observation I would like to make is that you need lots of short simple examples with just minor changes from example to example if you want to discover the rules of the new language - but in their eagerness to teach people new words and phrases (and avoid boredom) almost all the authors of didactic use examples and phrases that are as different as possible - which means that you don't stand a chance to discover any grammatical regularities. Properly used such collections of short, simple phrases with strictly controlled small changes could be for the study of syntax what the tables are for the study of morphology. But I know very well that I'm just a lost voice screamin' in the desert ...

By the way: I'm now sitting in Manila - last station before I return home

-----------

One of the best ways to find stuff aboiut for instance dinosaurs is to limit Google to show only finds in one single language and then give it a suitable search word. Though of course nothing can be better than a good ol' book which you an read in your comfy chair while watching TV. Except maybe these new digital books, provided that we can get a larger screen without sacrificing the low weight of the PDA's.

And then I have noticed that my log has had 20050 readers. I'm amazed, - I doubt that anything I have written before has had anywhere near that number of readers. But the thread is rapidly becoming a mess, so when I return home I will make in index of some sort to it.

I'm not quite as pessimistic: if you know a very closely related language then even one month of very intense activity can be enough to achieve a functional though basic level. I did that with Portuguese, where I didn't have to learn 20.000 words from scratch, but only a couple of thousand words - I got the rest from Spanish with some standardized transformations. And even though I haven't spent much time on Afrikans I have learnt to read and to some extent write it in fairly short time on the basis of my Dutch, which in itself is a fairly new language for me. But I would never pretend to have obtained even basic fluency in such a speedy-Gonzales language without having tested it in a country where the language is spoken. In the cases of Portuguese I have stayed for weeks in Lusophone countries, but my travels haven't permitted me to test several other new languages on my list. And I certainly do have serious limitations in those languages, especially when it comes to speaking, while writing them is much easier because I can take my time and make some checks when I'm sitting at a computer (like now).

EDIT: this post was intended for the thread about how fast one can learn a language. But it is too late to remove it from here, so I'll have to break a rule of the forum and repeat it in the intended thread

It: É incredibile quante persone hanno letto il tuo log. Congratulazioni!
