Thanks to Lingoleng (and I had almost said: as usual) to Youtube for the link. My next activity in French will however be related to the written language: I have found an old copy of Jean-Charles' "La Foire aux Cancres" on my bookshelf (called "Koen har fire hjørner" på dansk). It's a collection of preposterous claims and descriptions in essays written by French school children. Last time I read it must have been in February 1984 because I found a train ticket used as a bookmark in the middle of it. I suppose the reading pause just became slightly longer than intended.

I'll just quote one typical example (p.72):

While I was trying to google the name of the English translation (there has to be one!) I hit upon a nice little sentence with two auditive interpretations (one with one spelling error, the other with two) - again a find by the much regretted monsieur Jean-Charles:

The thing is called an 'Liability insurance' in English. It should in principle pay if I cause damage to other people or their possessions - but they will refuse if they can point to some exception in the things written with a tiny typeface seven pages into the policy. Or they can raise the premium afterwards to cover their expenses. Nevertheless you must have that liability thing because the bet is about the property of other persons (or even their life), and a responsible person must be able to cover any reasonable damage he/she causes - "ansvar" covers both "responsability" and "liability" in Danish. But actually every insurance is like a wager with asymmetrical odds: the company bets that nothing happens (or that it can explain things away), while you fear that something disastrous happens which you can't pay out of your own funds. And you pay the administration and the fat CEO wages because you are the scared one.

I spent a lot of time yesterday evening on the Russian verbs. I had had a peek into two grammars and found the division into subgroups confusing, with criteria going in all directions. Therefore I looked at the list at the end of my 'red' Russian-Danish dictionary , where there are lots of paradigms. But the order was confusing. So I came to think of how I wanted the order, based only on the present tense without any influence from other verbal forms. And I ended up with a system based on the following criteria: 1. I want a list sorted after the ending of the infinitive because that's the one the dictionaries and my wordlists use, 2) the next ordering principle must be the endings in the present, where there are two series: (j)u - (j)et - (j)ut (1s,3s,3pl) versus (j)u-it-(j)at. And then at the third level I want the subgroups based on changes in the vowels and consonants and moving stress patterns and things which you insert or remove and all that stuff - Russian has accumulated a lot of those irregularities. The grammars drone along about an i- and and an e-paradigm and two kinds of stems etc., and that may all be really relevant for a linguistic analysis, but I just want to have a system which is easy to use for me.

BTW: I spent most of my evening on Irish, and I got through two full pages of Potter. But at long last I also got my Russian verbal paradigms transferred to a green sheet. The problem has been that when I looked a Russian word up in my dictionary then I saw a code which referred to the morphological appendix at the end of the book. But in practice I didn't spend that extra minute looking up the the paradigm for the word, and if I did then I promptly forgot the result because the order of the paradigms wasn't user friendly (read 'Iversen friendly'). Now I can keep my sheet within reach, and I can see at a glance where a given code belongs so that the position in itself can be used as a mnemonic tool. And that's actually the whole point of making and using a green sheet instead of a full grammar - you make use of the visual circuitry in your brain in addition to the purely linguistic areas.
